Fielding chart question

Had a scenario last night I don't understand - gbX, 2 outs, no runners on, 1 rated infielder. Result is a single. Batter was Kris Bryant, so can't see a scenario where infield would have been in. Can anyone hypothesize why this would happen?

Is it an issue of which Fielding Chart I look at?

what position? I'm guessing not 2b or SS?

This. HAL will play corners in to defend against bunting for a base hit.

An effect of guarding the line? It's a strategy available on the CD-ROM to prevent doubles, but it increases chances of allowing singles....would make sense only if you have an advance.

Here is what we find on the computer game online Help file for the Doubles/Triples Maximum Rule:

By selecting this maximum rule the following items are added to the game:

1) Ballpark doubles and triples are added for all AL and NL seasons.

2) The ability to guard the lines to prevent extra base hits late in the game is available.

3) Excess triple problem is resolved. Players who hit below 1/2 the league mean of triples will now perform properly as these extra triples will be replaced with doubles. For instance a player who hit no triples will not get any triples directly off a pitchers card (these will be turned into doubles), however the small possibility of a triple occurring from the fielding chart still remains

Other than as provided above, the computer algorithm relating to how the rule is implemented is not disclosed by the game company.

I forgot about the guarding the lines rule (the second worst rule in SOM). However, isn't that only done with runners on base? (I'm not sure--just asking.)

PS. The pitch-around option is the worst IMHO. I just don't think either rule meshes well with the game engine and both are poorly executed (again, IMHO).

Nah, I don't think so. In real life, the baseball teams do it with nobody on. The idea is to force other teams to have three hits instead of two to make a run.

Thanks! That's what it was , the "guarding lines" rule! I didn't think of this , probably because in CDROM I refuse to do it. Sometimes I will guard the lines but ONLY with 2 out , a very close game AND a big hitter up
