New Franchise League: "Break Up The Yankees" LEAGUE FULL

This question probably comes too late, since the individual draft has begun, but I'll ask it anyway:

- If I own a player that has a better card on an undrafted franchise, can I draft that player in the individual round and use his better card?

I'm assuming the answer is no, but just wanted to clarify as I go through options.

That changes my individual team but when I go to join a league, the league that I originally created (Break up the Yankees, $100 million) won't show up because I've chosen a $120 million payroll. That's the issue - I think I need to create a new private league unless someone can tell me how to adjust the original league.

Treyomo - good question, but no - I would prefer to keep the player as they were with their franchise. Hopefully this doesn't mess up your strategy too much!

Thanks Brent - great choice. Man, I debated the Dodgers A LOT yesterday but ultimately landed up the coast. Just a quick reminder and question to all because this thought came up in my head as I weighed the Dodgers. Based on the rules outlined, Mike Piazza is a Met by definition, so based on the rules already outlined if no one picks the Mets as a franchise, then this soon-to-be HOF'er is a free agent. That being said, what if Brent took him as a supplementary draft pick (not a bad play in my estimation). This is not spelled out in the rules, but I would vote for allowing his Dodger cards to be available to Brent. Thoughts?

On a similar note, for players that are FA's - do we allow any of their cards to be used? Again, I didn't spell this out in the rules so I think we need to confirm this now. Again, my vote is "yes" on this count but happy to entertain any opposing views!

Correct me if I'm wrong, Mr. Commish, but the distinction you seem to be making is that we can use one of our draft picks to draft someone carded to our team, but who is a free agent, because of greater AB or IP with another team that was not selected. For example, the Reds (or any team for that matter) can draft Dave Parker as a free agent, since the Pirates, who own his rights, were not selected.

I have a question also. If a player whose rights a team initially owns is not on the team's roster after the autodraft, does the owner lose rights to that player, or does he retain rights to all of his players for the duration of the league? For example, if the A's don't draft Mark McGwire in the autodraft, do the A's still retain his rights, to use whenever they please, throughout the league, does he become a free agent or does he become available only to the Cardinals, who have his non-A's cards?

Ha! I've always wanted to use the Pedro card that way. I'm a Red Sox season ticket holder and I remember distinctly how that all came to pass. Pedro got hurt that season and when he came back they eased him back in via the bullpen (in a very structured manner, so he could warm-up like a starter) and he made two (I looked this one up - couldn't remember if it was 1 or 2) appearances. He pitched 4 innings one game and a 1-inning tune-up at the end of the season.

This would later come in handy in the ALDS vs. the Indians. Pedro got hurt again in Game 1 and didn't start a game again in the series...however the Sox somehow managed to force a Game 5 in Cleveland. They came out firing and scored a ton of runs only see Cleveland tie the game at 8-8 by the THIRD inning. Out trots Pedro, with no fastball to speak of, and he no-hit the Indians for 6 innings using mostly his change-up and spotting his "fastball" (high 80's, tops). It's one of the reasons why, the case could be made, that Pedro is the greatest of all-time. He didn't have longevity on his side, but the difference between him and the rest of the league in the heart of the steroid era is unlike any pitcher vs. his league at any time in baseball history...and this is not just hyperbole, others have written the same!

Thank you! There are so many things going on here that I find that I am contradicting myself so I appreciate you all keeping me in check. I think I misread/misunderstood Treymo's question so here's what I heard from the masses on this question.

- If a player is carded to two franchises, he is property of the franchise for which he played the most, by definition
- If the franchise to which he "belongs" is not drafted, then he is a free agent
- Once he's free, he's free so if he is picked up by the "lesser played" franchise to which he is carded any of his cards are fair game. Treymo, take note - this may contradict what I told you earlier!

On your second question - my intent was to keep players who belong to a franchise as "property" of that franchise. Especially since franchise owners might want to swap out certain guys as the season progresses. So I think we at least start that way. I'd also consider having a modified version of this - maybe set a point in the season at which all players not currently on a roster become free agents...but for the purposes of getting the league started, if you own a guy, you own a guy.
