Current Card Distribution

With what looks like a lot of focus on EXP ERA cards I was wondering what the current card distribution is in ATG. Here it is...
Hitters in ATG - 2,754
Pitchers in ATG - 1,878

Hitter distribution:
DB - Pre 1920 = 426 / 15%
Pre War 1921 - 1946 = 559 / 20%
Post War 1947-1966 = 545 / 20%
EXP 1967+ = 1,153 / 42%
NeL =71 / 3%

Pitcher distribution:
DB - Pre 1920 = 296 / 16%
Pre War 1921 - 1946 = 358 / 19%
Post War 1947-1966 = 387 / 21%
EXP 1967+ = 800 / 43%
NeL =37 / 2%

I wasn't able to find what the number of MLB players was per ERA to calculate the % of actual players, only the total number of 18,000+. But even with the obvious growing number of players due to expansion our current ATG distribution seems a bit EXP heavy. So I'd encourage us to take this into consideration when coming up with our nomination list, as I do feel the existence of SOM allows us as baseball fans to help create a historical record of sorts.

I would even propose that the next addition be PRE and POST players that don't currently have a card. Face it, Bibb Falk won't generate any interest when Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, and another Clayton Kershaw will get all the votes.

If you do the math, those numbers would suggest that the expansion era is underrepresented. 49 seasons with more teams per season compared to 20 seasons where there were only 16 to 20 teams each year.

I would prefer that recent players not be included. My ideal would make players wait until at least a couple of years after retirement/end of career but that is not the way it is here. For me 1901 or so would be the earliest. Then the math would be more favorable. Given the current parameters, however, the math does not favor your view Andy.

No, I realize that there are a lot of managers who just want the best new cards; I understand that.

But, as Rosie said, I'm in favor of helping "create a historical record of sorts". There are just players from 1900-1999 who I would rather see become part of the game before(not in place of) the latest superstar who can be played in 20xx games.

I too would like to see more older cards (but not dead ball or before) over current players. I was agreeing on the math though, and we should not shut newer players out. If I had one vote, it would be for 2010 Josh Hamilton.

I like some of the newer cards too, Steve, I just don't want to leave out players not in ATG (Bibb Falk, Whitey Lockman, Paul Konerko, Jermaine Dye) or players with poor representation (Buckner, Michael Young, Oswalt). And that's from all Eras for me, except for cards before 1894.
