Relief Fatigue

After all these years, I still don't understand how/when relievers get fatigued. I was under the impression that relievers could only pitch two games in a row without being fatigued. If they came in for a third game in a row, they would be at F4 (or something less than 9). In my series last night, Osuna got the save in all three games, pitching the full ninth inning in all three games and never going below F9. Why is he not fatigued coming into the third game?

I've noticed that too, mostly against me, but one instance when my guy went three--but one game was a one out save, also I have hit Starters up for 5 earned runs in the 1st and they have stayed in then game (Grienke types)--a couple of them long enough to qualify for wins.

I noticed that too. It seems that the computer rule is:

A reliever who has pitched in two consecutive games must rest unless

A) he pitched less or equal to his POW rating plus 2 (that is, less or equal to 3 innings for a R1, or less than 5 innings for a R3)
B) he never pitched in a F-state below F9 during these two games.

Maybe I should write "less" rather than "less or equal", I don't remeber, but I remember testing this rule and did not find any counter-example.

I just started a league, and in my first series, (http://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/schedule/1432623) Isringhausen (R1) pitched in all three games for me, always staying at F9.

Game 1: 1 IP
Game 2: 1.1 IP
Game 3: 2 IP

I guess that adheres to your rule, Marc. Now, if he pitches in Game 4 tonight at F9, I'm in for a nice season.

OK, Marc, what about this example from a different team's opening series from the same league (http://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/schedule/1432926)? Phil Regan (R3) pitched all three games for them, and in the third he entered as F4.

His appearances:

Game 1: 1 IP
Game 2: 3 IP
Game 3: 2 IP

In the first two games, he never pitched below F9, never topped his fatigue total of 3 in any one game, and did not exceed his fatigue rating + 2 (5, in this case) innings pitched, totaling 4 IP in the first two games before entering Game 3 as R4.

Shouldn't he have come in as F9 in Game 3, or am I missing something? (My guess is, like so many strat mysteries, this can be filed under "black box.")

You're right, and looking back at my own games, I think we should amend the rule:

A reliever who has pitched in two consecutive games must rest unless all following conditions are met:

A) he pitched less or equal to his POW rating plus 2 (that is, less or equal to 3 innings for a R1, or less than 5 innings for a R3)
B) he never pitched in a F-state below F9 during these two games.
C) he pitch 2 innings or less in the second game.
