Is there accumulated fatigue?

PostFri Sep 16, 2016 10:04 am

Here is the team.

http://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/1435509

As you can see, I tried something different, using 8 low salary starting pitchers with a mix of righties, lefties, high platoon and even differentials, and then have 3 strong bullpen guys, and am trying the mix & match approach in choosing my starters. I have used this strategy successfully in ATG, and it even worked here for a bit, but over the past stretch my bullpen guys are getting destroyed. Look at the current roll splits under Misc. I went back and looked at my recent games, and for the most part, nobody is pitching at less than F9 save for an occasional roll here or there, and none of the big 3 in the pen has pitched 3 games in a row all season. Certainly, there have not been enough fatigued rolls to account for my -110 roll splits.

So what I am trying to figure out is if the game algorithms have baked into them any sort of accumulated fatigue that is not seen in the F numbers, or if I am just on a horribly unlucky set of rolls lately?

To answer your specific question, no, as far as I am aware, there is no accumulated fatigue.

This said, from the sample I look, I have seen your two main relievers throw at lower F state a few times. So I think that it could explain some of Manship bad luck. If you have set them to not be removed before they reach a certain F-state, then you can't avoid that they have some throws at a lower F-state. Whenever I have a pitcher set to not be removed before F8, I always set them at quick hook and aggressive bullpen, and even then, I will have once a while my pitcher go as low as F3-F2 before being relieved.

This said, only bad luck explains why you have Volquez and Ray at such high percentage of hitters rolls.

The way I see your team, though, there is more than bad luck that affects your team. First, having Ross and Sanchez as spot starters is quite expensive. In 80M league, if you are to hire two 2M starters, they must pitch in my opinion close to 29-30starts, maybe a bit less if they face a strong ratio, say 70% on their good side. But with your team, they face a ratio of 45%-55% and they are heading for roughly 20 starts for the full season. In that situation, I prefer to have cheaper cards like 9R De la Rosa and spend my money elsewhere on the field.

Volquez seems to be a bad pick, since he faces up to 60% of lefty bats. A strong 5L would be a better fit.

Offensively, the lack of on a on-base guy hurts your team., especially vs rhp. Some platoons are not the best fit in my opinion. I have McCann on many teams, but I always pair him with a strong hitting catcher who is 4R+ And who is defensive weak, so that McCann contributes not only vs lhp,but also as a defensive replacement. Otherwise, I find it hard to justify his salary in a 80M league.Wieters has a good card vs lhp, and he's defensively sound. And Baker is too weak, both offensively and defensively, to be the matching pair with Gonzalez. In fact, as a 9th hitter, except perhaps very few exceptions, I would use Gonzalez over Baker vs lhp. He is stronger defensively, which is the main thing I look for for a 9th hitter, he's likely to have an at-bat, maybe two, vs a right-handed reliever, and when this happens, he will contribute more offensively than Baker, and he still has some BP HR vs lhp, a nice fit with your stadium.

Hey Marc, Are you the former Marcus Wilby, aka Luckyman? If so, It would be great to have you play in our Veteran laden GBBR League sometime if we have an opening. I haven't been in a league with you in years. But I always enjoyed the incredibly stiff competition you brought with your game. The reason I ask is because you express yourself similarly. And you always had a command of your bullpen. If so, I'd like to invite you back into the fold. If not, you have a really good command of the game as well. And you give very good advice. :) ;) Robert (aka swpsychic.)

Marc,

Thank you very much for the insight, you bring up great points and I definitely agree with you on most, if not all of them. For what it is worth (and apparently it is worth a .432 winning percentage) I did have a very specific plan when I went in. Obviously, the problem was the planner in this case.

None of my relievers are set to stay in below F9, so those situations are just where the bullpen was depleted and either no one else was available, or HAL was off drinking again. I think he does that on occasion.

I am not sure what I can do about the pitching at this point, as the 20% drop penalty will preclude me from replacing value with value. But offensively, I think CarGo can be an everyday player as you suggested, and I am going to try to mess around with the lineup some to see if I can leave fewer on base.

Let me know Robert, it all depends on the timing and availability.

I definitely will, Marc. We will have one finishing after this week and I will be setting up another one after that. So if anyone opts out, I'll leave the 1st open space for you. ;) Robert
