Worst Team

PostFri Sep 30, 2016 11:24 am

I saw where someone posted about a league that you tried to have the worst record, that sounded as challenging as trying to have the best team. Is there enough interest to try a league dedicated to having the worst record. If there is I will create a league. Maybe 80 Million cap with the requirement to have least 78 million on your roster at all times.

I thought about it, but it seems to me it's gonna turn into a hide abd seek game where all the tricks will be used to avoid expensive players to start and play cheap players in the field. So ,not for me after all...

Its like players who bet the "Don't Pass" line in Craps. I just don't like betting on a negative. But that's just me. :) ;)

I knew several of the team owners who was in one of these a few years ago on TSN. They said it was fun. I was going to post a league like this and get takers, but it's been a busy year.
It's hard to put together a team NOT to win! They played with an unlimited salary which meant you could go as low as you wanted as well.

to be clear, all the team owners agreed to have their Credits transferred to the worst team and 2nd worst team. It was prearranged with Bernie/TSN at the time that they would transfer credits after the season was over.

I guess the best fun by-product of the league were the player stats. The worst players in the set were chosen, so players who would never see the time of day got their day in the sun.

I also heard that the strategy regarding settings played a big part (i.e. slow-footed players were set to be aggressive runners/stealers, worst pitchers were set to be Slow Hook, D-rated H&R players set to H&R often, etc.).

Sounds kind of fun, but it takes 12 trustworthy buddies to make it work.

Also, it made sense to have a 6 to 8 round board draft to draft the worst players. When the draft runs, Hal kind of ruins the fun by selecting too good of players....so waivers is important followed by the frenzy.

I never played in any of those old leagues, mainly cause they were always posted when I had 0 credits!

I actually have 1, if you start it I would be game. But yes, clear with SOM first to make sure credits will transfer at the end.

I will start the league if we get some more interest. I have never contacted SOM but agree that the worst 2 teams
should receive the credits. If there isn't much interest in this league, maybe a league with 25M cap that you play to win, just thought it would be fun to use the low end guys as opposed to the usual suspects.

I was the commissioner of that league, which we called the .50 cent league. It was one of my favorite leagues of all time.

A couple of points though. It was played in the very brief period where you could get a free 1986 team, and no credits were ever awarded in those free leagues. It was unlimited salary cap, so you could setup your autodraft to draft a really bad team. We did require each team to have a starter for each position in order to stop the inevitable drafting of a team of all catchers or something.

Despite this, some jerk decided to join the league and draft every good player, clearly against the league rules. Bernie did take the team away from them, and I actually gave it to my son. Ultimately, the league as a group decided to let the dominant team play it out and see if it would eve lose. (it went 159-3!)

All that being said, it was one of the most fun leagues I ever played in, and I would do it again for sure assuming we could get 12 good dedicated managers to play it by the rules. It was also the only league I played in where "trash talk" was actually pretty funny.

For completeness, here is the worst SOM online team of all time (so far):

http://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/77245
worst hitting team: http://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/79136 (this was my team)
worst pitching team: http://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/79970
the dominant team: http://365.strat-o-matic.com/team/80041
