Role Player Forum

PostTue Nov 15, 2016 6:23 pm

There has been an ongoing discussion around adding cards that aren't 'superstars'. This forum is dedicated to nominating, debating and determining players that would be represented in ATG with a sub $3mil card and be good role players, both batters and pitchers.

For purposes of the upcoming 17.1 add I'd like the focus to be non-EXP players...but please feel free to mention more recent guys that should be considered, just know they'll be on the bench for this round.

tks

Just one guys opinion, but we need more 55 cent relievers who are usable on one side, such as Farmer, Crawford and the cheap Sambito. How to find cards like this I have no idea.

1957 Hersh Freeman
1958 Gene Conley
1958 Bob Smith

I realize these are only from two years, but I only have the cards on CDROM going back to 1957. I just went through 57 and 58 looking for huge balance rating differences among relievers. Another issue is most of the old timers were starter relievers but STRAT makes a lot of them one or the other for the online game

My thoughts would go towards utility players who can help out at a number of positions and might even be able to start in low cap leagues. So, here is a list of players who can help out at at least 5 positions (in no particular order):

1/ 1890 Tun Berger (PIT) (O6245) .266/.337/.332

Obviously, some of these would be more than 3mil (and I didn't list Kris Bryant, figuring he'll get in some day and SOM won't give us a 2016 player immediately.

Bill

By the way, as you have probably guessed the numbers after the team affiliation refer to scorecard positions, the "O" refers to outfield for the early players.

I posted this in the 17.1 Card Add Process forum but it probably belongs here instead.

I'll start by putting in a plug for Nels Potter, pitcher from 1936-49. He had a few decent seasons during WW2, and my suggestion would be to use 1945 when he went 15-11 for the St. Louis Browns with a WHIP of 1.10 and only 10 HR allowed in 255 IP. What draws me to him though is that he pitched almost 1700 innings, almost all of which were with the Browns, the Philadelphia A's and the Boston Braves, none of which survive in those cities anymore.

Another name worth bring up is former Giants' 1B Whitey Lockman. He had a very steady if unspectacular career through the 1950s. From 1948 through 1953 he batted in succession .286, .301, .295, .282, .290, and .295, with OPS ranging between .740 and .815. I'd suggest considering his 1949 season, (.301-.368-.429-.797 with 12 SB in 617 AB).

Ray Prim only ever had one good season, but it was in 1945 at age 38 with, as we all know, what was to be the last Cub team to win the NL Pennant for quite some time. In 165 IP mostly as a starter, Prim went 13-8 that season with a WHIP of 1.00 and only 23 BB and 9 HR allowed. Much like the Cubs, he pretty much disappeared after that, but played an important role in what was to turn out to be an historic season for the team.

I know there may be opposition because we already have a lot of his cards in the set, but how about a Babe Ruth batting card from his Boston years? It wouldn't be priced as high as his traditional Yankee seasons are, but there would certainly be some attraction to the idea. He wasn't exactly a slouch with the Bosox, as his 1919 season (.325 / .456 / .657) would attest when he first set the HR record with 29.

He would be a good platoon option.

1964 Gates Brown
