New card additions

Saw the blog post about the new cards being made available earlier than expected. Checked and they are there in the set.

Once upon a time there would already be multiple pages of discussion of the cards, which were best, which were over priced, which might be bargains, which .... everything. Yet I do not see a single thread. Amazed there is so little buzz, especially given how much fuss there has been about the additions not being frequent enough.

Is this due to lack of interest in the new cards or is it that maybe there is so much discussion during selection process nobody feels there is anything left to say? Are we so saturated that is it no longer possible for new cards to be different enough to generate buzz?

Not complaining, just an observation and expression of surprise.

FWIW, the pool is already too deep - so many options for different strategies at lower caps. These players will probably help most those who play franchise leagues. Not much to discuss IMO.

But then people aren't discussing much of anything here these days, either.

I am really disappointed A. McCutchen did not get one of his more balanced cards.

Modern players Goldschmidt, Donaldson, Trout, Braun and others get their best card, McCutchen gets a way overpriced dud. That's weak.

I am glad to see Gavvy Cravath get his third card.This is just what we need, more all-stars from the "Whites Only Era". How about making some cards with the stats from the Civil War prison camps? I am not seeing enough of the 1861 Spalding team. Or maybe some women's softball cards?

Umm, also, those new cards are way overpriced, like they used a whole new formula or something. McCutchen in particular will never go used in a 80-140 million standard league.

I have to say, I am usually a big cheerleader for SOM but this was a very weak effort with weaker results. Maybe they are losing money, I hope not.

I want to be in the same division as the person who pays 4.15 for Mark Eichhorn.

Um, this was his MVP card. And his OPS against RHP that year was .900; the only year he had a better OPS against RHP was 2014, when it was .962 but his OPS against LHP was more than .200 lower at .912.

Feel free to help us find these jewels of cards for black players. We'd love to have them. An ounce of participation is worth a pound of bitching.

Please enlighten us as to what the "right formula" is. I have numerous behind the scenes discussions with Joe the Jet, Maxie, Andy Cummings, John Garcia, and others who I consider to be very knowledgeable about what the cards are worth. Everybody has their own formula, and we all include various factors. And in particular, we have some lively discussions about how to price lopsided cards.

Comparable CF's to Cutch are Dimaggio 1948, Joe Rogan, Eric Davis and Kirby Puckett. These guys are all priced within a million dollars of him, and all are 3L, 4L, or 5L. I don't see him being all that far out of whack, when you consider that the two best "pure offense" cards among the 5 are Dimaggio and Rogan. Joe D is priced .71 million more, and Rogan is a 2 with a big error rating in CF and most people don't use him there. Cutch is clearly better than Puckett when you factor in all the extra on-base chances and the 28 gbA's on Puckett's card, and close enough to Davis that it's fair to price him above Davis due to the injury difference.

I suppose you could nominate Cutch 2014 for the next card add, we'd love to have that one too. But this one is far from useless with 64.4 natural on-base chances against LHP and 45 against RHP. I realize that the 2013 card was priced at $10.45 and the 2014 at $11.72, but I am not sure that accurately reflects the cards themelves. The 2014 Cutch compares very well with Ed Delahanty 1901, and that one is at $8.79.

I think one of the reasons that there is very little discussion about this card add is that none of the card prices seem to be nearly as ridiculous to anybody else as this one seems to be to you. And I think Mark Eichhorn's price compares very well with similar relievers like Ontiveros and Sosa. He's clearly better than both, and both those guys get used a lot at high caps.
