quick question on the rules.. I took the 54 Indians so I will get Al Rosen.. Am I required to use his 54 card, or can I use his higher value 1953 card when he won the MVP?

Great question, especially for clarifying the rules -

Sorry - you have to used the same *year* card as your franchise *year* choice...so by picking the 54 Indians, you must use the 1954 card for all of your Indians players.

I know it sucks, but this rule is the same for everyone. So I don't get to use George Bell's best card year for the 1985 Toronto Blue Jays - I have to use Bell's 1985 card.

The idea is to compare an actual year of the franchise to other great "real life" teams from specific years in history. The rest of the game mechanics is to make up for the imperfections in that card year.

I'm assuming we're trying for 24 teams, since you picked the Jays from that part of the list...I really want to take another crack with the '86 Mets with a different Shea Stadium...(I'll re-pick if needed for a 12 team league)

Thanks, Roland

It seems like we're getting a fair amount of interest, so let's try for 24 teams.

Marc said he would join in if we were doing 24 teams.

Seriously, though, despite the way Marc described the teams in the orginal post , I would like to say that as long as you can field a decent team with most positions decently covered (i.e. I have Damaso Garcia at 2nd base on the 1985 Jast, as an example of covering a position), then go for any franchise year that you think covers it, with a payroll of $50 million or more for that franchise/cardyear. My idea is to make this as wide open as possible for choices of franchise card years. Just be able to field a team from that card year.

If a player was on the team roster for that year but does not have a card for that year you just get to pick one of the cards available to that player? Sorry for a dumb question but I'm just trying to understand the rules.

A very good question - it's important to have a clear answer - from the original rules by Marc Pelletier, whatever the franchise "year" that you have chosen, you must use that same card year for every player on your roster. You cannot pick the better card year for the same player, if that is not the year of your franchise.

So for example, my 1985 Toronto Blue Jays have George Bell (1985). So I can (and I must) use George Bell's 1985 card. I cannot use other card years for George Bell, even if they are with the Blue Jays (e.g. his very good 1987 card cannot be used by my 1985 Blue Jays team).

Must be the specific year card. You can't pick the card you prefer."

The confusion for you might arise from the comments about resolving conflicts where different teams might have access to the same player, with different card years. For example, with Doyle Alexander being on the 1985 Blue Jays, but also being on the 1977 Texas Rangers. So if another manager picked the 1977 Texas Rangers (and I picked the 85 Jays), then we have to use a rule to resolve which of us gets to use Doyle Alexander, since the game system won't allow the 1977 Texas Rangers to use him, as well as simultaneously allowing the 85 Jays to use him. That's the conflict resolution issue that the rules discuss.

But since I have the 1985 Blue Jays, I *must* use George Bell's 1985 card. I can't use any other card for George Bell.

Let me rephrase my question. When I look at baseballreference.com for the 1956 Yanks I see that Phil Rizzuto had playing time (only 52 AB) but does not have a 1956 SOM card in ATG. Would I be able to use any Rizzuto cards or no?

Same for any player that played on a team but does not have a SOM card for that season.
