Post WWII & Expansion Franchise Dream League - $125 mil DH

PostFri Dec 16, 2016 7:39 pm

Most of us grew up watching many of the Post WWII and Expansion Era players play. We all have favorite teams and many of us have probably wondered over the years "what if" a player on the team hadn't had an off year, or had been acquired earlier, or had played a full season or hadn't been traded, or had played with better players, or had played in a different ballpark, etc., etc. This league allows us to answer some of those questions.

So what is a Franchise Dream League? Each manager picks a franchise in a predetermined order each season and drafts a complete team for that franchise from his eligible players, whereupon the next manager in line will do the same until all 12 teams have been drafted.

League parameters: $125 mil, DH, frenzy, 5% drop.

1. Player eligibility: Any Post WWII or Expansion card, regardless of year and team, based on a Major League Baseball season, of any player who played for the franchise as set forth in http://www.baseball-reference.com/ . That means appearing in at least one game for the franchise. He does not need to have a card for that franchise as long as he played for the franchise. NeL cards are not eligible, as they are not based on an MLB season.

Examples: Pete Rose played for the Reds, Phillies and Expos during his career. Any of his cards are eligible to be used by those franchises; Pedro Martinez played for the Expos, Dodgers, Red Sox, Mets and Phillies during his career. Any of his cards are eligible to be used by those franchises.

Eligibility exceptions: Willie Mays is eligible only for the Giants; Hank Aaron is eligible only for the Braves; Duke Snider is eligible only for the Dodgers; Yogi Berra is eligible only for the Yankees; Ron Santo and Billy Williams are eligible only for the Cubs; Frank Thomas and Joe Horlen are eligible only for the White Sox.

2. Draft: Complete teams are drafted one at a time in a predetermined order. Once there are 12 managers on the signup sheet below, a randomizer will be run to determine franchise selection order for the first season. For each season thereafter, franchises are re-picked and draft order will be determined by the following matrix, read from left to right, with the first column representing the manager's draft position in season one:

1-12-7-2-9-3-10-5-8-4-11-6

2-9-3-10-5-8-4-11-6-1-12-7

3-10-5-8-4-11-6-1-12-7-2-9

4-11-6-1-12-7-2-9-3-10-5-8

5-8-4-11-6-1-12-7-2-9-3-10

6-1-12-7-2-9-3-10-5-8-4-11

7-2-9-3-10-5-8-4-11-6-1-12

8-4-11-6-1-12-7-2-9-3-10-5

9-3-10-5-8-4-11-6-1-12-7-2

10-5-8-4-11-6-1-12-7-2-9-3

11-6-1-12-7-2-9-3-10-5-8-4

12-7-2-9-3-10-5-8-4-11-6-1

Note that this is a 12 season commitment, so that all managers will have a chance to pick in spots 1 through 12.

Each of the 12 columns in the matrix represents the draft order for a particular season, read from left to right. So, for example, the manager drafting first in season in Season 1 will draft 12th in season two, 7th in season three, etc., etc.

3. Trades: Trades are allowed, so long as all players involved in the trade meet franchise eligibility requirements.

4. Unique Ballparks: Ballparks will be selected when the franchise drafts its players. Use any Post WWII or Expansion Era ballpark that has not been selected by another franchise. It need not be one used by your franchise.

5. Limits on franchise use: A franchise may be only used once per season. Franchises are re-picked each season. Use any franchise as often as you like, as long as it is available. Note, however, that there likely will be a vast difference in a team, say for example, the Yankees, picking 1st and picking last. Also, Washington Post WWII and Minnesota Expansion are considered to be the same franchise. Washington Expansion players (such as Frank Howard) are included among Texas expansion players.

6. Divisions: Once the players for all franchises have been selected, SOM will place teams in divisions based upon their pick order, as follows:

East
1-4-7-10

Central
2-5-8-11

West
3-6-9-12

7. Getting started: Put your name on the sign up sheet in the next post in this thread. Once there are 12 managers, a randomizer will be run to determine franchise selection order. Once the franchise selection order is determined, I'll set up a private league and PM the password to each manager. The league will be set up like a live draft (except that entire teams will be drafted one at a time), so managers will join the league before their teams are drafted. A manager need not announce his franchise selection until it is his turn to pick.

Good luck and have fun. - Bernie
