Did You Know...

PostThu Dec 15, 2016 12:11 pm

Chuck Connors...(although we don't have a card for him)...

A native of Brooklyn, was a member of the very first Boston Celtics team in 1946. He also had the distinction of being the first professional basketball player credited with shattering a backboard. Scouts and coaches recognized Connors outstanding natural athletic abilities and it wasn’t long before his sports career really took off.

He left the Celtics to play with his childhood heroes, the Brooklyn Dodgers (only played 1 game). After that, Connors joined the Chicago Cubs in 1951, where he played first base. The icing on the cake: He was also drafted by the Chicago Bears.

Maybe we can get a 51 card....BA.238 w/5 dingers in 66 games....maybe not ha ha

Yeah, he was 6'-5" or 6'-6", he and James Arness were both very imposing men, easily the tallest actors of the day.

Here's a list of many other physically imposing actors.

http://www.imdb.com/list/ls074835241/

Lots of ex-athletes are on the list, but noticeably missing from the list are Lou Ferrigno (the Incrediblle Hulk), Fred Dwyer (Hunter), Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator), Ted Cassidy (Lurch from the Addams Family, deceased in 1979), Brad Garrett (Robert Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Airplane) and Dick Butkus (Lite Beer commercials with the late Bubba Smith, who did make the list). Below is a link to a classic sketch with Butkus, Smith and Rodney Dangerfield.

Here's a Lite beer commercial that I don't remember at all, but talk about physically gifted!

and here's one that's appropriate for Christmas. Enjoy!

I remember the catfight commercial, but this was clearly the R rated version and I definitely don't remember that!
