Chris Speier 70s and 80s

PostTue Dec 06, 2016 1:30 pm

Of all the online SOM games, the 70s Mystery game is my favorite and the one that I've competed in the most. I have frequently used Chris Speier as my shortstop. As most 70s Mystery game players are well aware, there really isn't a large choice of decent hitting shortstops who also field well.

I'm using Speier for the first time on an 80s Mystery team that I'm currently competing in. In reviewing a recent game, I noted that he was Hit By Pitch. To my surprise, only one of his five cards in the 80s game, his '87 season, has a HBP, and it's on a 3 roll, no less. That intrigued me to research the matter a little more.

During his 19 year career, Speier was HBP 35 times. The most occurred during his rookie season, when he was plunked 7 times, and he was HBP a total of 21 times during his first 6 years.

For whatever reason, he was only HBP 14 addition times during the remaining 13 seasons of his career. Apparently, Ron Hunt he ain't. [I concluded a 70s season recently where the '71 Hunt, a member of my squad, was HBP 22 times!!].

Interesting ..... Checkout how many times part time player Brandon Guyer got hit this year, in very limited action.... He has to be one of the toughest guys in the game today.
