Pinch Hitting frustration

PostWed Jan 04, 2017 2:02 am

I'm in a 70's league with Ed Brinkman as my SS. Although my "assigned pinch hitters" (Bob Bailor & Jerry Royster) are sometimes already in the game, Hal NEVER pinch hits for Brinkman! Even though he has the lowest OBP and 2nd lowest SLG on my roster. I don't have the "Don't PH for" hitter pref box checked for L or R pitcher.

Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

I read in another post somewhere that you should see more pinch hitting if you have more hitters on your roster. The more guys on the roster the better chance you will see pinch hitting.

What wavygravy2k writes is in part very true, though there is a bit more to it. The computer likes to make sure you don't run out of players, so the more backups you have the more the computer will use a pinch hitter.

But also realize that the computer will ONLY use a pinch hitter if:

1. Your team is losing.
2. It has to be the 7th inning or later.

The computer will not pinch hit if you are winning or if it is earlier than the 7th inning.

If you are playing the Mystery Game you can learn something about which card a player is on by some of the computer's substitutions or pinch hitters. Obviously if the computer pinch hits for Reggie Jackson, Rod Carew or someone of that ilk versus a left handed pitcher there is a good chance Reggie or Rod is on a card that is not very good versus left handed pitchers, and/or the pinch hitter may be on a good card versus LHP.... To further complicate matters it could be the pitcher your team is facing is on a great card versus left handed batters.

If you are new to the brilliant Mystery Game you should read the thread at the top of this forum entitled, "Help Reading The Mystery Cards", without this knowledge you are putting yourself behind the eight ball, as it were. Best of luck!

This in part is what makes the Mystery Game the most fun and the most like a real GM/Manager experience. You have to figure out what kind of season (card) your player is going to have.

If you have more questions regarding your specific team it may help to post a link to that team in order for more experienced players to offer advice.

Hey Mike,

I completely agree with Radagast's posts, couple other observations for you...

I would bet that Brinkman is on his '70 yr which is reasonable AND your bench guys aren't on very good years. Pinch hitting will provide clues as HAL is very mathematical when it comes to subs. I don't know how far you are into your season but try and keep track of when your pinch hitters are used and for who, was there anyone in scoring position...HAL will use clutch factors and he loves power. If you're not seeing PH's in obvious situations pick up a few new bench guys.

Second point, forget about your pinch hitting roles. Its my experience that that's 20 seconds you'll never get back.

If you post a link to your team guys like Radagast and I can look a little deeper.

Good luck

Thanks to all for the useful feedback, it's much appreciate. I will look into getting some different bench players.
