I also think that in the live cards and dice SOM tournaments around the country that somehow Strat controls the dice rolls by the players letting first time or newer participants be successful early on getting them hooked to coming back in future years.

If you are going to ridicule people can't you make it funnier?

Sorry freeman, It wasn't meant to be funny. It was to show how ridiculous the argument that SOM is smart enough, and savy enough to even attempt it, to manipulate leagues somehow to their benefit.

Not sure if Strat is skewing anything to help noobs freeman as evident by the declining numbers playing this game online. I think they are quite happy with their "core" players, the dozen or so who win no matter what team they put out there, the players who dont care win or lose and just play because we love baseball and the person who decides to just check the game out and play a league or three. Its not realistic baseball and those who accept it keep playing those who dont move on.

What is your evidence for this? A couple of years ago I started keeping an eye on the Total members number at the bottom of the Board Index. At that time there were 5600 or so members. Now it's up to 7232.

Palmtana, I am basing this on the fact it takes two to three days sometimes to fill a league and this is during the baseball season. There were times when 2 leagues would fill in a single day sometimes more when back on TSN

Haha, exactly! Not to mention that their are so many factors involved in 12-24 team leagues...so Strat weighs the relative experience of all the managers, manipulates all the dice rolls to favor newbs so they play more...no wait, vets who have played more...no wait, the league is all newbs, oh no! What now!

I don't know, Strat says it manipulates things somehow to give the home team a ten point advantage in batting average. You have any idea how they do that? If they can tag all home teams to get x more points in batting average than why can't they tag all teams with say 0-10 teams experience with x more points in batting average? It's not this ridiculously complicated notion of having to figure out every league but simply tagging/marking teams to get a certain dice roll advantage in every game. If they face another newby team that cancels out. And they could do the same thing in reverse with teams that are earning too many free credits (that would not stop those teams from winning but just make it hard enough so that they don't totally dominate the game). As I said, I certainly am not saying that there is any proof that they do this but conceptually it doesn't seem too hard to me.

Here's one for the conspiracy theorists. Random Number generators can be based on a seed, in which the order of the dice rolls is based on one number, such as number of milliseconds before midnight. Now, if you are so inclined, and play in a league in which dice roll results are published, examine all your dice rolls for games that begin at a particular time, such as 10:45 (EST). Then, examine all your dice rolls for games that begin at a different time, such as 11:20 (EST), etcetera. Look for a pattern. For games that begin at 10:45, is the first roll always 5-10? If you see a pattern and field multiple teams in multiple leagues you might win more than someone who sees a pattern and fields only one team at any given time. If you don't see a pattern, then, forget this post was ever written. :)

Here's another one for the conspiracy theorists. Perhaps, the creator of the software has a mischievous sense of humor, and, as Freeman suggests, puts in code to give a slight bias to a particular group of people, similar to a slight bias in favor of the home team. Perhaps, nobody is aware other than the software creator, since nobody else may be familiar with the code.

So, the argument is basically about the integrity of the service provider, rather, than, whether anyone has the smarts to do something that shouldn't be done.

Count me as one who believes there is no unfair bias that gives a group of people an advantage. There is insufficient evidence.

I would say, however, after reviewing the top 200 managers list, I am impressed with that one manager who has won the finals in 29% of teams entered. I'm also impressed by the 32 managers who have made the playoffs more than 50% of the time. And I'm impressed by the manager who has made the playoffs 69% of the time.

Note: I see that you can sort the list different ways. I now see the manager who has won championships 42% of the time he has joined a league. Very impressive.

Hmm, I took at the top 200 managers and something caught my eye. The very best managers seemed to converge around winning a ring 25% of the time. So I looked through the top 200 and looked at all those who won 20% or more of the time.

% of Championships won

Panzerace 42
Hallerose 26.7
Adamkatz 26.7
Marcpelletier 25.9
Fakesportsfan 21.8
GaryThomas 22.8
BruceF 26.2
Jschah950 22.5
Nomad 25.7
Cristano11 23
Gordalino 24.2
Normwelch 34.4
Frank35 28.8
Labratory 34
Mitch1952 26.4
Jet40 21.4
Christano1 21.1
Jflatour .243
Play By The Rules 24.9
Mr Hertz 21.1
Hamilton-g 25
Donfesq 25.3
Djmacb 22.7
Dr Blocide 25.5
Boyer 14 20.0
Qksilver 69 22.7
Ny 21.4
Bud 23.0
Swordsman 23
J-Pav 23
Aerodave 21.6
Kire 26.6
Barclay11 24.0
Steve107 22.5
Ghk 20.0
Cheap seats 24.0
Stratfanatic 38.0
Docdave 23.6
Barnak 21.8
Measured Mayhem 20.8
Rf87 22.0

There are a few anomalies I'll discuss but it is curious that so many top managers wind up right around 25% (18 top managers win between 23 and 27% of the time) . It could just be winning a 25% of championships represents as good as you can get at the game, with chance, competition and luck making it almost impossible to do better. The anomalies were Panzer Ace, Normwelch, laboratory, and Stratfanatic. I believe Panzer Ace and Normwelch played a long time ago when things could have been a lot different. The same argument might hold true for labratory who it looks like played quite a few of his games a long while ago. That leaves Stratfanatic who has won a lot of championships. But his teams are phenomenal in the play-offs (.531 in regular season and .623 in the play-offs) and that is why he is winning so often. That does not explain it really but there is a further anomaly beyond winning such a high percentage of championships, the huge jump in performance from regular season to the play-offs.
