In 1971 Mickey Lolich had an amazing 45 starts and 376 IP. That is an average of over 8 IP per start.

Modern day pitchers might file a grievance with the player's union if they were asked to pitch that much.

With my bullpen I can use pitchers (Lolich and Stottlemyre) who have 9 inning endurance ratings.

I remember (I'm pretty sure I'm getting this right) watching the Tigers play (watching on TV), with Lolich pitching. If I have this right, they were saying how Lolich would "go to work on the outside of the plate against right handed batters", just inducing them to go after a pitch that might be just outside the strike zone, but not over the plate anyway. He would make that kind of pitch for most of the afternoon (he must have been changing locations slightly, and speed). So, he wasn't trying to overpower them, just get them out. He must have been brushing them back off the plate from time to time, with inside pitches, also.

Does anyone else remember that about Lolich? My memory plays tricks on me sometimes, but my memory seems to be very clear on this recollection.

Makes you think about the game of baseball - how it has evolved, and whether you could try to get that approach to pitching work in the modern day. It also makes me think of Mark Buerhle, who made a long career from working fast (like old style pitchers) and trying to keep batters off balance with changes in speed and location. Makes me wonder if you could get a young pitcher to make a career out of that nowadays. I'd like to think that's still possible. If you could make it work, you might get comparatively long innings, perhaps working on shorter rest more often (if he was that good), and perhaps a long career. Maybe without Tommy John surgery?

Interesting to ponder.

I'm ready to load when the East has loaded.

Randy, as soon as you make your pick, please join the league. Bill will join as soon as Scott makes his final pick, as he has to pick two additional free agents to get his roster to 25 and doesn't want to inadvertently pick a drafted player.

Hopefully the East is loaded tonight and we can get started on the Central. Looking good for opening day next Monday. Thanks for moving along.
