I think your roster size limit will help with fairness for the weaker teams. As a thought, would a 2 round message board draft improve balance? I'm a little concerned that the autodraft might leave a couple teams in a pretty hopeless situation. On the other hand, I have no suggestions on a message board draft would be ordered. Just a suggestion. Thanks for putting together such an unusual and realistic league.

Due to the player pool size we will be instituting a max roster size, so no carrying 28 guys to stash a few players. The 80's minimum roster size is 23, so we will go with a max 24 players = 10 pitchers and 14 hitters. I hesitate to mandate 23 max as that seems just a little bit too limiting.

Also please note: During waivers please let's avoid holding onto guys above the max roster size until the very last minute. As a courtesy to all the other managers let's try as best as we can to stay within 25 players as we build our rosters.

Anyone have a strong opinion around another option?

Is it ok to go with 9 pitchers and 15 hitters if my pitching staff works out that way? Or is it 10 & 14?

We did a league with a 5 round message board draft where a team could only lose 2 (or 3, can't remember without going back and looking) players each round. So if we did a random ordered draft and the A's were 1st and Padres 2nd and they took Rickey & Winfield then no other Yankee cards could be taken in that round. So Reggie and Tommy John could not be picked until round 2. This did lead to other problems - I had the A's and the BoSox picked after me and I didn't pick Eck until 3 because I kept losing the max players each round so the BoSox couldn't pick him. But the draft was fun and seemed kind of a compromise to help ensure a team didn't get killed in the autodraft.

But as we wait for the last team pick this does have drawbacks that people need to able to keep up with message board or it will take forever to get this started.

Yes, Lynn is available in the auto draft to all his carded and non-carded clubs

HEY! Fred Lynn is a Red Sock! Always will be!

And so it begins! HA

Tell that to the Red Sox brass that traded him to the Angels for Tanana, Dorsey and Rudi. It's their fault that he's not a BOS Core5 in the 80's.

80's requires a min of 10 pitchers, so unfortunately not.

I thought about a small draft on the boards as well but I think it makes sense for us to try it at least once without that as we might be over engineering it.

Ultimately I think this format works best across 4 or 5 seasons and here's why...
We could then institute a restriction around the movement of players (so as an example a Core4 couldn't be snapped up in the end of season FA draft until season 3 or 4) and we could provide a bit more protection for the Core3's during the initial season, treating them like Core4's. I believe this would put a governor on the player movement a bit and somewhat mimic the actual player changes. BUT, and this is a big BUT...there is obviously no way to predict how this will shake out for our upcoming season. I'd rather have less parameters and see what happens. If this format ends up being just the best thing since the NE Patriot's comeback then ok, let's tweak it a bit and dive in deeper.

Rosie - the rules on this page are all up to date, right?:

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=639582&start=260

In particular this comment here, which maintains the autodraft protection (only) for core 4 and core 5 players, right?:

"For 80's season 1, Core5/4 players cannot be auto drafted by any other franchise other then their Core5/4 franchise. All other players Core3/2/1 can be auto drafted by any listed franchise. After the auto draft any Core5 players that has another franchise listed (not carded but played for) or any Core4 or and Core3/2/1 not auto drafted can be picked up on waivers by any of the franchises listed for that player"

Thanks again Rosie!

No I need to add in the Free Agency period after season 1. I'll do so and repost here.

To answer your core4/5 question, yes it is correct as you have it above.

Anyone send him a message? I was going to but if he has one already it would be kind of pointless
