Defensive Question

PostSat Feb 11, 2017 8:55 pm

Assuming I want to get all three bats into the lineup, which defensive arrangement do you think is better?

1B Yastrzemski 2 e16
LF Williams 4 e4 (+2)
DH Ortiz

Or

1B Ortiz 5 e25
LF Yastrzemski 1 e16 (-3)
DH Williams

I have "1" defensive replacements for both positions.

My old Strat defense rating sheets got lost a few years back, but I seem to remember that on some pickoff-attempt rolls, the first baseman's e-rating came into play. So my choice would be to DH Big Papi. Williams won't get to nearly as many balls as Yaz in LF, but will make fewer errors, and Yaz is far more valuable at 1B than Ortiz.

I think it is a pretty close call. The range and error numbers alone would argue slightly in favor of Yaz in LF vs 1b, and his -3 arm will probably reduce the number of guys trying to score earlier in games than Williams' +2 arm.

I can't speak to the hold ratings at 1b, but Big Papi will not field any worse for TRYING to hold someone at 1st, as he already is nailed in place with that 5 range.
