Potential HR possibility for W ranked players

PostMon Mar 13, 2017 2:21 pm

I know there have been discussion threads in the past as to how W rated players can get homeruns in SOM. I believe the most common assumption is that a triple is stretched into an inside the park homerun.

I played a Windows game this past weekend between the '68 Red Sox and the '68 Tigers (I was managing the Red Sox against HAL). When the pitcher, Jose Santiago, was at bat, he got a result of FLY LF(X), and an odd play resulted, in which the left fielder (Willie Horton) and the center fielder (Jim Northrup) collided while going for the ball, leaving it untouched, and that the batter, Santiago in this case, was able to circle the bases for an ITP homerun.

Santiago did not hit any home runs during the 1968 season, but he had one during the 1967 season, and clubbed another home run during the World Series against the Cardinals.

The rare play you describe can happen in our online game as well.

When evaluating which year a player has, however, I mostly dismiss the possibility. If a weak-hitting player hits a homerun, it's far more likely he got it legitimately and not through this rare play.
