HAS SOMETHING NEW (Pitching Etiquette) BEEN DISCOVERED???

PostTue Apr 11, 2017 2:25 pm

Is this legit? I have been playing SOM here for quite some time and just heard of this for the first time. I am in two leagues right now that have included this same rule:

"Pitching Etiquette request if a SP is traded or picked up from the free agents please adhere to that SP's 4 day rest period between starts unless rotation or injury dictates."

The above is all the explanation I got up front before joining these two leagues, but as requested (below):
FURTHER EXPLANATION: The guy (Daly57) who specified this "Pitching Ettiquette" in two different leagues, says that since HAL doesn't enforce four day rest period when new free agents or traded pitchers are added, he wants managers to adjust settings so their new free agent or traded for pitcher doesn't pitch until he's rested.

The idea interested me. I asked the commish a few questions about it. My questions irritated daly57 and eventually a few more because daly57 and the rest simply (understandably) wanted to get on with the league without discussion.. I wish the discussion were here instead of there. I cant recall all the good points for and against. Wonder if we can without the originator defending his idea here, but I believe many of us will run into this "Pitching Etiquette Rule" in the future if daly57 keeps it going? I don't intend to join any such leagues unless the idea is refined. There are problems to solve.

Daly57 has been invited and is welcome to provide a better explanation of his "Pitching Ettiquette Rule" and his idea of how it works, what to do when "Pitching Etiquette" is ignored.

Do you guys think this rule is needed or what? Check poll and add comments for or against below. You can change your vote as the discussion continues.

If you're going to post a poll, would help to explain exactly what the question is. Like others, I've never heard of "Pitching Ettiquette" rule (and that's over 400+ leagues going back to 2002). Seems like kind of an edge case...

I think the key question here is-Does HAL allow non asterick pitchers to pitch on three days rest if they have been recieved from a trade or picked up on waivers?

OK, that makes sense. I'd like to see SOM program that into game engine. Like I said, the survey question is unclear.

The people in the two leagues where this rule appears are so bothered by a full message box discussing the issue that all they seem to be able to do is throw ad hominems at the messenger (calling me names), insisting only one side of the discussion has a point so shut-up and play, the Commish is a good guy so shut-up and play, or if you expect SOM to do anything about it, they won't; so shut up and play.

They don't seem to be interested at all in defending or explaining the idea of "Pitching Etiquette" to the rest of us. There is something to the issue, but like RiggoDrill said, There's not enough explained here to understand a concept he never heard before. That's my point exactly. The type in BOLD (above) is all the explanation you are going to get before you join such a league, then, once in, the commish simply wants to dictate his less than satisfactory way of dealing with someone who violates the rule. There was a whole discussion of pros and cons that disappeared off the inbox page. As I think of them I will post them here best I can.

I think SOM should definitely build the rest into the game engine so traded pitchers can't pitch before their required rest period without a fatigue penalty.

It's ridiculous that currently a pitcher could be traded after starting on Game 1, and then pitch for his new team on Game 2. SOM should be able to fix this.

In the meantime, how do we handle this before SOM fixes it (which might take a while)?

The way it has been handled thus far is inadequate. Doesn't seem it should be left up to a Commish to make compensation rules up, after the fact, when "Pitching Etiquette" Rules are broken.

It was one of my teams which was the first victim of broken "Pitch Etiquette" Rules. I didnt see how the Commish could fix it after my team lost three games in a row that night, so I said - I dont like the rule, dont think it can be controlled, so forget it. The Commish then imposed a penalty on the offender and a couple of guys agreed to his "solution", not me. The Commish believes that since "I didnt care" and the offender agreed to the penalty everything was fine. And, that's when most everyone started calling me names and telling me to shut up.

I really don't care how it affected this one team of mine, but this should not continue to go on site-wide. I believe most of you care more about winning than I do. And, somebody is going to be a lot more unhappy than me if they find themselves in my position. If a full message box bothers you, perhaps, you should help understand and solve this before it happens over and over again?

Salty posted this in one of the two "Pitch Etiquette" leagues:

"in all honesty - those who play atg don't do anything about this issue.
It happens that sometimes a pitcher does pitch twice due to a trade, but folks just move on with it.
The only diff is here it was mentioned in the description- but still think its not a big deal.
Too much drama for small issues from the start here imo."

So, if someone trades for a pitcher, on the last day of the season in a close race, pitches w/o rest, and knocks someone out of the playoffs, no one will be angry?
