Beltre injured for 41 more days

PostFri May 05, 2017 11:26 pm

Hi all:
Somehow Adrian Beltre got injured pretty bad on my team -- he's out for 41 more games. Since we've played approx. 50 games, am I wrong to think that keeping him and his approx. 8 mill dollar salary doesn't make a lot of since considering he will be out for so long and even if I keep him, his 8 million dollar salary is going to be for considerably less games than the average player. Would there be complete consensus that...
a. (this injury system is more realistic than past systems) This length of injury is not real fun to deal with as a manager.
b. I should drop Beltre and any high priced player who is out 25% of the season immediately.

My other question is me wondering if there is a certain cut-off point (relative to injuries) where I should cut anyone who ends up having an injury that will keep him sidelines for x % of the season. I imagine it depends on their cost and other factors but wondering if anyone has a formula to deal with this type of situation. Thanks for the input as hate to cut one of my favorite players but don't see keeping him as much of an option unless someone changes my mind. Have a good weekend all and good luck in your seasons.

or maybe tell me if this isn't the appropriate board for this question or if I am missing something about how these boards work/place the veterans assist for the game. Thanks all for any direction you can point me - much appreciated

Timothy,
Your actions should be dependent on at least two factors - 1) the size of the league (12 or 24) and 2) the depth of the free agent market. If you are in a 24 team league, there may not be any players available to pick up that justify cutting Beltre; however, in a twelve man league, there should be enough talent to choose from that would justify dropping Beltre. A 41-game injury is huge and there is no guarantee that he won't be injured again when he returns.

Another related factor might include the depth of your bench (who is playing in lieu of Beltre) and the flexibility of your players on the roster (e.g. how many others are 3b eligible). You might also need to work other teams for a trade. Are you deep elsewhere (starting pitchers, relief, outfield) or do you have a player that someone else in your league covets? You stated that Beltre is one of your favorite players. Perhaps someone had their eye on one of your premiere players during the draft. Send out feelers. You might be able to trade an asterisked pitcher to another team that would allow them to have a four-man rotation. In my current 24 man league, we have a manager who had more than half of his team composed of 2016 Cubs players. Had I drafted any Cubs, I would have certainly tried to deal them to him as it was clear that he had an emotional attachment to those players.

Tim,

You have good points, but If you feel confident to make the playoffs despite Beltre's injury, then you can think your team will be stronger in the playoffs with him on board than if you have a 78M team because of the cut. But if you are not holding a playoff spot, then yes you will be better to have a 78M for 150 games than to have a 72M team for 50 games and 80M team for 70 games

Hey guys:
Hope all is well and thanks for the responses. I appreciate the help as it seemed pretty straightforward to me but wanted to have some veteran insight before making the move. Really appreciate both of your time and input and am definitely not holding onto a playoff spot so seems like it is time to give him his walking papers.

78*150=11700
72-50=3600
80*70=5600
3600+5600=9200

You gain 2500 value by cutting him and having a 78 mil team.
