League idea: Decades — would it work?

PostThu May 25, 2017 6:20 pm

I've been thinking  about organizing a league in which each manager fields a team within a specific decade, with a couple of exceptions.

Has this been done? Do you think it would work?

Manager 1: pre-1900 + NeL
Manager 2: 1900-1909
Manager 3: 1910-1919
Manager 4: 1920-1929
Manager 5: 1930-1939
Manager 6: 1940-1949
Manager 7: 1950-1959
Manager 8: 1960-1969
Manager 9: 1970-1979
Manager 10: 1980-1989
Manager 11: 1990-1999
Manager 12: 2000-present

You would be assigned an era based on a randomized run, and maybe it would work to be restricted to a ballpark from your era?

What are your thoughts? I haven't sorted yet on the spreadsheet, but I'm guessing some eras (perhaps pre-1900 + NeL) might have an unfair advantage. Anyone interested?

its been done before:

This was in ATG 6 - don;t think there were enough players and two Negro league teams were included

ATG 5

Was it any fun? Hate to cover old ground. Maybe I'll go for a 24-team league with 5-year increments. :P

Of those three links you provided, only the first link looks like league managers had teams that restricted players to a single decade. But either way, it's been done. ;)

There's a league on the board right now called "By the Decades" that is doing a version of this. The 80's, 50's and 70's look still to be available if you want to check it out.

My bad - the second link was for a league where you had to have a player from each decade on your team - the last link was broken down by time periods but exceptions were made I believe to add 5 additional players post waivers.

That 2010+ NeL players team is going to crush it.

I'm in that league, with a team from the 80s. One of the difficulties of it is selecting a park from your decade, and I have but ONE--Royals '80. Now, I COULD go for speed merchants everywhere, but no...not...I just drafted an all star team, and am going to pray.

Draft note: I didn't get Clemens in the AD because someone inadvertently took him, thinking they were drafting 90s when they were supposed to be doing 70s. Screwed over the 90s manager, too. Now we both have to wait to pounce on him after waivers. After Rocket, my best RH option is Sabes, unless I want to go with 3 lefties and pick up Fernando's 3R card.

Other musings: I'm not sure the 2010/NeL is an automatic, but they're going to be really good. Thing is, though, in sky's the limit leagues like this one, every team has great pitching. My best bet is that my team is versatile enough to win in various ways. I've got speed and Defense (well, everyone will), but there really isn't a huge bomber in the mix (50+ HR's). The pen is pretty good--and I'll bet they get used a lot.:-)

On a different note:

I've always wanted to draft rosters using the Old Timers team set (42 teams, sorted by decade). Just not sure if all players are represented. And there's a ton of overlap, too, esp with all those Yankee teams.
