1) Nothing is more variable, i.e., has a greater standard deviation, because it has so few samples per season compared to other performance measures. On one of my teams Galarraga makes an out only 60% of the time on a 1b(x), and he's 1b-1e14, while Gardner is 83% on 3b(x) and he's 3b-1e11. That's after 144 games.
2) Def vs Off depends on the ballpark, and in a way you might not expect. Is Appling's def more of a hindrance at Candlestick or Huntington Ave? I'll leave that one open to see what the prevailing wisdom is.
