It appears to me that "those who have not yet signed as of the start of that year's draft are not eligible for the prospect draft" is referring only to this league, since there is no mention of MLB.

Since "that year's draft" and "the prospect draft" are both used in that sentence, I infer that it is the start of the FA draft that would be the effective date required for prospect signing.

After all that parsing, I feel downright rabbinical!

I would say its open to interpretation as to the meaning of "those who have not yet signed as of the start of that year's draft are not eligible for the prospect draft". Its never defined what draft the rules are referring to. What is different with this league as compared to many others is that the prospect draft takes places after MLB draft, due to the start date, and that is fine, but like alot of other leagues, rules were copied from other leagues, but not updated to reflect what this league really wanted. If so true, highly regarded players would have been drafted last year, Benintendi, B.Rodgers, etc.

I think the only way to settle this is to vote on this as a league as to who and who is not eligible for prospect draft, as this will impact picks in this draft and I am fine with starting over once its know how this league will operate.

It is in everyone's best interests to get this straight. Especially since it may affect who some managers draft. Lakeview Dave may have taken Nick Senzel, last year, had he understood his availability to be drafted. Our FA draft was scheduled to start on Wednesday, July 5th. But, the first pick was actually taken shortly after noon EST on Monday, July 3rd, I think. Hence, the cutoff is July 3rd if I am interpreting the Rabbi correctly.

Most major league teams try to sign their 1st round picks very quickly after they're drafted before something happens. Nevertheless, some draftees hold out. For those of us who do watch the amateur draft, be aware of the time that's passed since July 3rd. If the guy you want to pick signed his contract after July 3rd, he's not available....

I think it is noteworthy that this conversation has occurred before. Mark Appel and Jon Gray are examples of how the rules have been. That Lakeview Dave or other managers are new and don't have the benefit of those past conversations and precedents is important and needs to be respected. That's why we're getting it straight, now. But, this hasn't been an ambiguity in this league. If we want to vote on changing the rule, that's fine. But, the interpretation has been made before and is not subject to further interpretation, in my opinion.

Glad there was a precedence, this issue is now over I think, I was unaware of Appel as I was not in the league at that time, and I have gone back and read the comments now.

I'm fine moving forward, glad this was dealt with in the past. I'm fine either way but if I was voting I would say prospects signed prior to start on that year's MLB season. So players drafted this year would be eligible next year and not this year. Perhaps in the off season if there is enough interest, we could have a vote.
