Concentration vs. Dispersion

PostMon Oct 02, 2017 4:40 am

What do you do if you're faced with a choice of either blowing an over-sized portion of a limited budget on just a few players, or avoiding superstar priced players altogether, and spreading your budget more or less evenly? Would one method have an advantage over the other?

Here's the setup: 12 team auto draft, full ATG8 set, $80MM cap DH league, 5% cuts

Teams will draft with one of the two rulesets below.

Ruleset A) You can't spend more than $6.5 million on any single player.

Ruleset B) You must spend a minimum of $40MM on your top 5 players, with at least $20MM of that on your top 2. You can't hold any card valued between $5.5MM AND $6.5MM, inclusive. However, you can hold any player who has cards both in and out of that range, you just can't use the card(s) falling within the range.

Essentially, you must either spend at least half your budget on 5 guys, or go without a single player above ~2x's the $3.2MM roster-spot average for the $80MM cap.

This is a two league commitment. Each league will have 6 teams running under each rule. Each manager will run a team under rule (A) in one league and a team under rule (B) in the other. THE TWO LEAGUES WILL RUN SIMULTANEOUSLY.

Both your teams must use the same ballpark. Ballpark choices are open and will not be revealed until the simultaneous running of the two auto-drafts.

The commissioner is offering a trophy to the grand champion. The trophy is a box of 2 official size chocolate baseballs. The champ is not expected to retain the trophy for posterity.

Grand Champion will be determined by the following progression:

1) Win Championship Twice
If none,
2) Compile the #1 combined regular season record AND win one championship.
If none,
3) Win one championship and win it against the other champion.
If none,
4) Win your division twice and win one championship. If there's a 2-way tie based on (4) it will be broken by aggregate regular season head-to-head record between the two champs. Second tie breaker is post season winning %.
If none,
5) Win one championship and compile a better combined regular season record than the other league champ. If there's a 2-way tie based on (5) it will be broken by aggregate regular season head-to-head record between the two champs. Second tie breaker is post season winning %.

Divisional assignments are going to be based on where you live. So when you sign up below, please list your city and state. The divisional spots will be the same for both leagues, with a shift from ruleset A to B and vice versa.

Rumor has it, that the West Coast Boys (ggyuppie, dmorgan90275, and myself), are going to top off the season with a single elimination best of 7 format using the board game at Legends in Long Beach....
stay tuned....

RE A Couple Questions

PostMon Oct 02, 2017 3:10 pm

I have a couple of questions:

1. How will you assure that both leagues have 6 teams under each format?
2. Will each division have 2 teams under each format?

You got it exactly.

I'll assign 2 teams in each division one format or the other in league "A", and the league "B" will have the opposite assignments.
