$60M vs $80M

PostWed Nov 08, 2017 2:18 pm

All my ATG leagues so far have been $80M cap.
I'm intrigued by the $60M cap option.

For those who have played in a ATG league with this setting...
Can you share your thoughts and comments

Thanks in advance

I am a big fan of the lower caps. 60m is good, and 45m even better or even 30m With lower caps you have to make due with marginal players, or weaknesses. The teams tend to be more realistic in nature since you cannot pay everyone. It is also great to see lessor knowns star for your team.

I prefer salary caps, for me it is half the fun, like a chess puzzle.... I guess I prefer 75-80 million but I should give 60 million another chance. ... I am not really interested in caps lower than 60 or higher than 100, but I can see the appeal of both....

The lower the cap more skill is needed.

$60m is great, and I think you would enjoy that cap level Chris. Not only is it more "realistic" (insofar as that's possible here), but it's a great way to explore some lower priced players and even find some that could help out at the $80m-$100m level. The 32nd iteration of "Wipeout Zone," a recurring 24-team $60m league, is in full swing right now. Here's a link if you'd like to get a sense: http://365.strat-o-matic.com/league/434858

I am also a big fan of $45m and $30m, which have to be imposed by the honor system because it's not an official option in the game. This is when team building gets really challenging and players who normally never see the light of day play full seasons in the starting lineup.

Uh, no.

All caps require the same basic skill sets with the exception of caps over 220M, where money is not an issue. At 60M you essentially just shrink the player pool, which is not dissimilar to what happens with high cap drafts, just in the opposite direction. Because of the shrunken pool size, mistakes are harder to fix and there is less room for error but if one does one's due diligence then they are no more difficult than other caps. One could, I think, make the successful argument that 60M is more draft dependent than other caps where, given the larger pool of usable parts at other caps, one can overcome a bad draft with skillful moves post draft, whereas at 60M there simply aren't as many viable options to compensate for a unlucky draft.

For example prior to ATG 8, I used to loathe 140M caps because they were so draft dependent, that it was nearly impossible to recover from an "unlucky"draft. Now they have become perhaps my favorite cap because a skillful manager has enough options to still put together a competitive team despite a horrible draft and you get to use more of your "favorite" players.
