the no wierd names thing...

some people will/may be aware of the 'movement' others not,

BUT

there does seem to be a sizeable minority who find their leagues and teams more aesthetically pleasing when the team names have a 'realistic' sound/feel to them - i.e., in the general form of a Geographic location (City/State/Region) and a mascot or totem (think St. Louis Cardinals or New York Yankees) than one that includes team names like
(for example) 'Embarassing Flatulence' or 'Search for Truth' (not saying I have ever seen those names, but you take my point, yes? Names that would probably never appear in professional sports at any level - I readily concede that softball teams worldwide might well have names like that.

Anyway, I found out that the 'NWN' (no weird names) community exists when I created a league a year (maybe 2) ago with the name No Weird Names and it filled almost exclusively w/ teams that followed the 'formula' a 2nd and third league, likewise, and then some other owners have created leagues also w/ 'no weird names' as part of the name and 'unofficial by-laws'

recently, there was one of those league inbox kerfuffles in the most recent league I created when one or more guys entered teams with 'weird names' and some of the purists spoke of it.

a couple of points and a convention, which I anyway, will follow

first, apparently when some people saw I had created the league (and some of the other earliest franchises who had joined) they presumed is was a NWN league. My ego is big enough to be flattered by that (because of thinking I am well known and thought-of-enough in the community that when people see I have created a league it is w/ the NWN 'stipulation')

second, some (I presume) newer players entered teams which did not adhere to the NWN philosophy leading to one of those league-mail spats we all dislike, but sometimes get sucked into

having not specified NWN in the league name or description, I feel a little responsible ,since I realize now (and again, am flattered) that enough opponents know me well enough (and more, care enough) about my preference to presume that NWN was the preference for team names

anyway, to stop boring you and get to the point, I propose (and will use myself) the convention that if a league name includes 'NWN' that the owners who are joining would enjoy reading headlines, recaps, and viewing standings that would be reasonable in 'real life' absent that convention, eg., in auto-leagues, if you are in a division w/ the ABC 123 or the Disgusting Excretions, that is the way it goes.

thanks for listening,

Patrick, methinks it has been a few (more than one) years since your concept was birthed.
Lots of teams and lots of reasons to read the sports page...even when it arrives two days late, as it did in my childhood.
Go Expos! (and if they don't quite get it done, then the Cubbies work)
I am an appreciative participant in your leagues.
Good on ya!
