Best $80M players

PostSat Mar 31, 2018 9:21 am

I know the live drafts tend to gravitate toward unlimited cap, or at least 200 million, but I you were in a live draft for an $80 million standard cap league, who are the players you think would be drafted in the first round?

If you play many $80M leagues, I'm sure there are a couple players you want on your team that are very difficult to get unless you slot them at the top of your draft list. Of course it all depends on ball park and whether it's a DH League.

Here's mine:

1) Honus Wagner
2) Ty Cobb
3) Stan Musial
4) Rod Carew
5) Ed Delahanty
6) Richie Ashburn
7) Nap Lajoie
8) Pedro Martinez
9) Billy Hamilton
10) Bruce Sutter
11) Mark McGwire
12) Dale Murray

Typhoon - I love this topic and find your list interesting. I have a slightly different take on the priorities for $80m players. Unless I have a very specific plan I rarely value any expensive player too highly because there will always be a passable analogue for the pricey player I like in free agency. Also, now that a new generation of pretty good r3's has joined the set, Sutter and Murray are no longer required to be ranked up top if the dastardly super-reliver strategy is chosen.

To me, the real competition at this cap is for low-to-mid-priced players.

Here's (sort of) top 12. There really should be several lists based upon ballpark type but this will be more general:

1. Lajoie (8.78 or 8.21)
2. Tommy Davis (4.34)
3. Wagner (6.55)
4. Pineiro (4.96)
5. Arroyo (2.98)
6. Butch Henry (3.56)
7. Reggie Jackson (5.38)
8. Heredia (1.23)
9. Rueter (.65)
10. McBean (1.39)
11. Vinny Castilla (5.42)
12. Duren (3.94)

Damnit' Matt, don't spill the beans on the good guys. Go with the original list. I play 99% $80 mill leagues and Matt's list is far more representative (at least of my draft cards). Of his top 12 you'd rarely ever see any of them on the waiver wire after the autodraft.

Give me the $8 Eddie Mathews all day long. Terry Fox or Ryan Madson for bargain relievers. Dick Egan at 2b.
Or give up on bullpen altogether and the get the 4 best S9 SP's I can.
Ashburn
Carew
any McCovey (they're all good relative to price, depends on how much you want to spend)
Sanguillen (either)

The thing I like about the lower salary caps in the opportunity to win with a variety of approaches. The key thing is identifying high value players for each style of play. I've seen teams with stud starters and great defense win it all, and I've also seen bomber squads with no pitching or defense bludgeon other teams into submission. A cheap five man rotation with guys like Henry, Pinero, Duren and Donald seems to work pretty well in most ballparks, but IMO you still need a reliable R3 or R4 to fill the much-hated "super reliever" role.

two players who I always find to give great production/value are Ben Oglive and Vinny Castilla both under six million and Vinny is bullet prove.

80 M live draft... Why, that's just my game.

Let's actually do one, not merely talk about it. How about 9:30 p.m. E.D.T. on the Friday after it fills. 80M, no dh.
