Defensive Replacements? C'Mon HAL... AGAIN!!!!!

PostMon Jun 25, 2018 8:41 am

I don't get it.
I've got only 1 defensive replacement in my settings.
Joe Morgan is set to replace Bid McPhee.
Yet, this is what happens to start the 8th inning...

TOP OF INNING 8
SUBSTITUTION at 2B: Joe Morgan
SUBSTITUTION at LF: Frank Robinson
SUBSTITUTION at CF: Eric Davis
SUBSTITUTION at RF: Ken Griffey Jr.

Now, I had Eric Davis in LF.
Griffey in CF.
And Robinson in RF.

There re NO injuries.
And no other defensive replacements in my settings.

I won the game and my defense got better ONLY because of the Morgan setting. But that was what I had set.

I don't get why this happened...

I understand your confusion at the switch when you hadn't called for it, but the new defensive alignment is better than the original.

Griffey is still @ 1(-4) in RF.
Robinson is still @ 2(+1) in LF.
and Davis is still 2 1(-3) in CF.

1. How does that make me better? The - arm of Griffey in RF?
In real life, you would like your RF to have a strong arm, and while Griffey has a better arm than Robinson, does this really matter all that much in Strat? Is this written somewhere with regards to Strat?

2. Like you mentioned Andy, even if it DOES make me better defensively, I didn't ask for this. I wonder what would have happened if I DID have these settings aligned this way.

And AGAIN it happens...

http://365.strat-o-matic.com/game/playbyplay/437177/134

(Bottom of the 4th)

SUBSTITUTION at 3B: Darrell Chaney
SUBSTITUTION at SS: Eddie Kasko
SUBSTITUTION at LF: Frank Robinson
SUBSTITUTION at CF: Eric Davis
SUBSTITUTION at RF: Ken Griffey Jr.

As you can see, in the top of the inning, Both Caminiti and Larkin go down.
But, I DO NOT have these substitutions in my settings.

Strat's response for those who care...

"There is code within the program that whenever a defensive move is made the code will also look to optimize the defense to ensure the best defensive alignment is used. This code is really used for utility players who have many positions on their card who can be moved to another position when a stronger sub comes into the game. However we have also seen this happen to outfielders where it moves the strongest arm to rightfield and puts the weakest arm in leftfield. In the past we were able to prevent straight LF/RF changes from occurring in order to prevent switches other than what users have set up with just two outfielders. In your particular case, 3 outfielders are being moved as the computer sees the benefit of having the strongest arm in rightfield as outweighing the small error drop between centerfield and rightfield. This particular situation was not covered by the above addition to the code as 3 outfielders are moving compared to just 2. We will take a look at this in the next few weeks to try and add code that prevents a switch of all 3 outfielders from occurring"

What is odd is that for once SOM actually did something right with their outfield adjustments.

FWIW,

The defensive replacements actually work in the 20XX games.

Using the Hitters Page as well as the Team Strategy page.
