First, you should break down your teams to figure out the reasons you are losing. Is it your offense, defense, pitching, ballpark, and/or opponents? Batting average is a part of offense, and affected by ballpark and opponents.
To have a successful small ball offense: in addition to batting average, focus more on on base percentage (lots of walks/hbp), high doubles and triples, low ballpark home runs, home ballpark with high singles and low ballpark home runs, and above average speed. Go back through your completed seasons and reverse engineer the teams that score a lot of runs without hitting home runs. I can often lead the league in runs scored while being last in home runs.
