Agreed. Without some cheap bench cards, the franchise selection has zero value to many.

I agree as well, with a slight twist. Start with the 2007 season player list, but pick each player's best Colorado season in order to maximize the chances of these guys being used. We have too many players in ATG who had great careers but are only represented by 1 crappy card because an entire team was added intact. (A guy like Tony Armas comes to mind off the top of my head.)

I think we need some of the lower priced cards, as they never get added otherwise. Also, if we don't add any of the cheap cards, then the Rockies still won't be viable as a franchise league team.

You're right. I was generalizing. To give an example, what's the point of adding a pathetic Steve Finley card that batted .181? Or Ian Stewart with 43 AB? Use one of Stewarts other years with COL; any one of 008-9-10 would be better.

Ok here's my suggested direction...

Keep the 2007 team intact as much as possible except as outlined below.

2007
Starters:
C- Yorvit Torrealba / no card / 443 PA / 323 obp / 699 ops / 2+0e1 / E
1B - Todd Helton* / 1 card (MBC) / 682 PA / 928 ops / 2e2 / 3R
2B - Kaz Matsui** / no card / 453 PA / 342 obp / 746 ops / 2e6 / 1R
3B - Garrett Atkins / no card / 684 PA / 853 ops / 4e15, 1b-4e30 / 3R
SS - Troy Tulowitzki / 1 card (MBC) / 682 PA / 838 ops / 2e12 / 2L
CF - Willy Taveras / no card / 408 PA / 367 obp / 748 ops / 2-3e8 / 1L
RF - Brad Hawpe* / no card / 606 PA / 387 obp / 926 ops / 4-3e7 / 5R
OF - Ryan Spilborghs / no card / 300 PA / 363 obp / 848 / RF/LF-3+0e3, CF 4 / 3L /good ying to Hawpe's yang

Bench guys:
UT-2B,3B,SS,RF - Jamey Carroll / no card / 268 PA / 3167 obp / 616 ops / 2b-2e6,3b-3e47,SS-4e12,RF-4+2e16 / 2L
UT-1B,3B,RF,LF - Jeff Baker / no card / 159 PA / 296 obp / 643 ops / 1b-4e30,3b-4e18,RF/LF-4-1e4 / 3L
CF - Cory Sullivan* / no card / 153 PA / 336 obp / 721 ops / 2-1e1 / 2R

that's 11 so far.

Pitchers - oh boy
I feel the best approach here, because the starting staff is so slim, is to pick the best yrs possible. The relievers are better but we might consider taking a few liberties with their seasons as well.

Starters, pick 3 or 4?:
SP - Jeff* Francis 2007 or 2006? / 11 seasons, 8 COL / no card /
2007 - 1.38 whip / 17-9 / 4.22 era / 215 IP / 2L http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90188/2007/1/2007
2006 - 1.29 whip / 13-11 / 4.16 era / 199 IP / 1L - much more balanced and overall better card

SP - Aaron Cook 2006, 2007, 2008 / 11 seasons, 10 COL / no card
2006 - 1.39 whip / 9-15 / 4.23 era / 213 IP / 6R
2007 - 1.34 / 8-7 / 4.12 / 4.12 era / 166 IP / 3L http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90125/2007/1/2007
2008 - 1.35 / 16-9 / 3.96 era / 211 IP / 1L - obviously most balanced of the bunch and a SP* http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90125/2008/1/2008

SP - Marvin Freeman 1994 / 10 seasons, 3 COL / no card
1994 - 1.20 / 10-2 / 2.80 era / 113 IP / 2R http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/33998/1690/1/90

SP - Jhoulys Chacin 2010, 2013 / 10 seasons, 6 COL / no card
2010 - 1.27 / 9-11 / 3.28 era / 137 IP / 3R http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/91312/2010/1/2010
2013 - 1.26 / 14-10 / 3.47 era / 197 IP* / 2R http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/91312/2013/1/2013

SP - Jorge De La Rosa 2013, 2014 / 15 seasons, 9 COL / no card
2013 - 1.38 / 16-6 / 3.49 era / 168 IP / 5L http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90147/2013/1/2013
2014 - 1.24 / 14-11 / 4.21 era / 173 IP / 5L http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90147/2014/1/2014

SP - Kevin Ritz 1995 / 9 seasons, 5 COL / no card
1995 - 1.36 / 11-11 / 4.21 era / 173 IP / 1R http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/3492/1690/1/90

SP - Pedro Astacio / 15 seasons, 3 COL / no card
problem with Astacio is his COL years weren't good. His best were with LA, but not sure we want to stretch that far.
1999 COL - http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/3609/1999/1/1999

Relievers, now this gets a bit better.

Should go with these 2: thats 16 or 17
Manny Corpas 2007 1.06whip / 2.08 era / 2R http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90132/2007/1/2007
Jorge Julio 2007, 1.60whip / 5.23 era / 8L http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90285/2007/1/2007

But then...these 5 in some fashion would make 21 or 22.
Jeremy Affeldt 2007 COL or GIA (2009, 2011) / 14 seasons, 2 COL / no card
2007 - 1.36 whip / 3.51 era / 5R http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90005/2007/1/2007
2009 - http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90005/2009/1/2009
2011 - http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90005/2011/1/2011

RP - Brian* Fuentes, 2007, 2005, 2008 / 12 seasons, 7 COL / no card
2007 - http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90192/2007/1/2007
2008 - http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90192/2008/1/2008
2005 - great v L, 12bb, 1 db & .5 1b against L.

RP - LaTroy Hawkins, 2007, 2002, 2003, 2008 / 21 seasons, 1.5 COL / no card
2007 - http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90243/2007/1/2007
2008 HOU - http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90243/2008/1/2008 6R
2003 MIN - 1.09 whip / 9-3 / 1.86 era / 5L
2002 MIN - 0.97 whip / 6-0 / 2.13 era / 2R

RP - Huston Street, 2009 / 13 seasons, 3 COL / no card
2009 - http://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/90569/2009/1/2009

RP - Gabe* White, 2000 / 11 seasons, 2 COL / no card
2000 - 0.94 whip / 11-2 / 2.36 / 1R

2010 Carlos Gonzalez makes sense as a Holliday replacement and Joe Girardi (93-95) as the first Rockies catcher has merit. That would put us at 23 or 24 pending which way we went above with the SPs. The last 1 or 2 spots should go to low end guys. Please feel free to bubble up a few of those again, but make sure they will be sub $1m.

whew,
tks for staying with me on that

Do they have a separate Colorado only Gabe White? In 2000 he also pitched 18 innings for Cincinnati. Taylor Buchholz 2008 pitched for them the entire year and did very well, with a .95 whip and decent HR allowed in 66 innings.

I think we should go with the 2006 Francis card and the 2008 Cook card. Both of those SPs should be in. LaTroy Hawkins should be added from the 2007 Rockies team, in my opinion. (21 years, no card)

Cards added from other franchises don't really count as Rockies...

I'd really like to see the 1993 Joe Girardi card included.

The 1994 Freeman card is a good option as another SP.

Nice job Rosie. I think you've covered all the bases here. A lot of good research here.

Agree completely. My preference for Chacin would be 2010, and 2013 for De La Rosa.

All good options, and I'd prefer that as with the suggestion on Hawkins, we stick with 2007 on Affeldt and Fuentes.
Another option would be Taylor Buchholz from 2008. He started on the 2007 team and wasn't particularly good, but in 2008 he was used strictly in relief with very good results (2.17 ERA, 0.95 WHIP).
