Willie McCovey

I was saddened to hear of the passing of SF Giants legend Willie McCovey yesterday. Growing up in southern California, I was a Dodgers fan in the 60s, but I admired and respected those Giant teams of that era. In my mind the two giant Giants - Mays and McCovey - were the best middle of the order hitters in an era dominated by pitching, a fearsome 1-2 punch. RIP Stretch.

That is amazing! He is just behind Lou Gehrig at 7 and Frank Robinson at 9. Not enough credit is given to Stretch.

A tremendous slugger. The first baseball game I ever saw was Giants vs. Dodgers on Monday Night Baseball in 1973. Down 8-1, McCovey contributed a homer in a furious Giants' comeback that ended with a Bobby Bonds walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th. I've been a fan ever since!

His 1970 card incorrectly lists his fielding as 1B-4e18. In fact, he was rated a Range = 2 that year. Would be nice to see Strat-o-Matic fix that when they get around to releasing ATG9

I feel like I could have written this! Oh how I remember those days, and how I would fear each at bat by Mays and McCovey. Great times! RIP Stretch!

This was the Peanuts strip for December 22 1962 about two months after the World Series. As you may or may not know, Charles Schulz adopted home town was Santa Rosa California and he was a big Giants fan. My Dad cut it out of the San Francisco Chronicle and I still have it although it is very old and faded. I’m glad I could find it online.

As a kid, I was a Giants fan in the late 60's, and I loved Stretch! Moved to Chicago in 1970 and remember him playing at Wrigley, hitting monster shots on to Sheffield Avenue. He's on my short list of all-time favorites. A unique talent. RIP, Stretch, and thanks for the memories.
