Perhaps you’ve heard of alternate history, books written from the perspective of, say, what life would be like if the Confederacy had won the Civil War or the Normandy Invasion had failed. Well, this Franchise League will somewhat follow that premise and, I think, will be loads of fun.
Imagine crafting your own Cleveland Indians team, beginning in the Deadball Era and drafting and selecting NEW players, thereby avoiding the failures of the Cleveland Indians from 1955-1993. Or can you reformulate a Yankees dynasty, or will the Phillies become the 20th century’s baseball dynasty?
You are the owner and GM of your own team. Players retire, get drafted or get traded from franchise to franchise.
21 Seasons, Expanding Cap, DH
For those players with more than one card, ANY card can represent a player.
Whenever applicable, when a player is carded to more than one team, the team holding the highest $$ card has rights to the player. The year on a player card has NO BEARING on this league. Each player will be given a debut season and a last season based on the years they played in MLB.
Ex.- Ted Williams 6 12
Ted Williams began play in 1939 and his last season was 1960. His debut season is Season #6 and his Final Season is Season #12.
Season 1 Prep— 90m Cap
TEAM DRAFT—Randomized Draft Order. Each manager will draft a Roster from one of the Original 16 Franchises. Rosters are listed below in the thread. The 4 unselected franchises will no longer exist.
For your Season#1 Autodraft, you may only use players on the Created Rosters for your Franchise, plus any players you drafted in the Dispersal Draft. A 2-Round Dispersal Draft will be created, based on lowest roster payroll to highest to disperse the players from the 4 unselected franchises. After the Autodraft, ANY Free Agents who are ELIGIBLE for Season#1 will be available to any Franchise, regardless of real-life franchise affiliation.
You may make trades , and the trades don't have to be "franchise-related". Also non-franchise related FA pickups are OK, but only once the Autodraft has run.
At the conclusion of Season #1, the set of players who began play from 1920-1923 become eligible for the Season #2 ENTRY DRAFT. Also, any players whose playing career doesn’t extend into 1920 must “Retire”. I will formulate and post a list for each season of what players have to "retire" and what players become eligible for the entry draft for each Season. All players on your roster at the conclusion of Season#1 who did not “retire” are yours until the Autodraft for Season#2 runs.

First, Each manager will select one player carded to his franchise who began MLB play during the years 1920-1923. This player must be carded to your franchise and will be designated your Franchise Player.
Any players carded to more than one team will be assigned to the team that holds the highest $$ card, in almost all cases.
Then there will be an 6 Round Entry Draft of the rest of the 1920-1924 entry players in Reverse Order of Finish, in which ANY other players can be drafted by ANY team. (These picks are not franchise-related)
GOLDEN AGE option for Franchise Picks--Each franchise may choose to draft TWO Franchise Players at the expense of their First Round Pick in the Entry Draft in a particular season. This option is allowed ONCE from Season #2 through Season #10 and TWO times from Season #11 to Season #21 (CANNOT USE THIS OPTION IN CONSECUTIVE SEASONS/Seasons 10 and 11 DO NOT COUNT AS CONSECUTIVE SEASONS).
ANY players who retired before 1920 will be INELIGIBLE for SEASON #2.
TRADES ARE ENCOURAGED
Player Trades are STILL allowed, and ANY ELIGIBLE Free Agent on the wire is eligible for ANY Franchise. PLAYER Trades can take place at any time, Pre-ENTRY DRAFT, PRESEASON or during Regular Season, other than after Game 142.
TRADING DRAFT PICKS WILL ONLY OCCUR in the time between the END of the SEASON and the NEXT SEASON'S ENTRY DRAFT. You may not trade a player for an ENTRY PICK during the Season.
ROSTER SIZE
Rosters will not exceed 25 players. If something unforeseen occurs (like not enough catchers or Rps to fill out a roster) and you cannot fill out a roster, you may grab a player in the .50-.60 range who has already “retired”. (I don't believe this will occur.)
TEAM NAMES
Naming Your Team—PLEASE USE THE FRANCHISE NAME, no weird off-the-wall team names or cities. This is a "replay" of 20th Century MLB.
This procedure will continue as we roll through the seasons, with 21 total seasons.
The "select one player carded to your franchise" for each Season keeps a little franchise integrity going, because, for example, the Red Sox can select Ted Williams for Season#5 through Season#10 (started in 1939) and the Cardinals can select Stan Musial for Season#6 through Season#10 (started in 1941).
However, for example, it will be hard for the Dodgers manager to grab ALL the talent that came through Brooklyn in the late 40s..........
EXPANDING CAP
The plan on the expanding cap is:
Season1 1888-1919 90m
Season 3 1925-1929 95m
Season 8 1945-1949 100m
Season 12 1960-1964 110m
Season 14 1970-1974 120m
Season 16 1975-1979 125m
The 95m in Season3, I'm just figuring some inflation will happen as we move through first couple of seasons
The 100m in Season 8 represents the return of stars from WW2 and the emergence of black superstars
The 110m in Season 12 represents the first set of expansion teams. While we won't use expansion teams, those PLAYERS will start a bigger influx of players into the player pool for a given season
The 120m in Season 14 represents the 1969 Expansion, in the same way as the 1961-1962 Expansions
The 125m in Season 16 represents the 1977 Expansion.
