Post War Outfielders---IMPROVEMENT Edition

PostMon Feb 25, 2019 8:11 pm

Many have said that we don't know what we are getting when we nominate cards, so I've taken some time to put some stats together from some cards, using Diamond Dope and Veterans 1975 for the park, since it's kind of neutral (10,10,10,10). I asked Bill for his permission/blessing to do this. So I'll be posting some card add ideas, thoughts, etc to hopefully keep interest up and give folks some stuff to actually discuss on the boards.

My Goals on IMPROVEMENTS:
1--Provide a card that is more representative of a player's career than their current card(s)
2--Provide a card that is fundamentally different than their current cards

1953 Jim Busby, WAS, Bats-R, 2R Balance, CF-1(-2)e6
LH--4.3 2b, 1.4 3b, 0 HR, 12 BB 287/379/361, .740 OPS
RH--5.3 2b, 1.8 3b, 0.2 HR, 0 BB 393/405/482, .886 OPS
Busby was better than his .90m card, He would give WAS Post War a "1" in CF

1948 Tommy Henrich, NYY, Bats-L, 2L Balance, RF/LF-1(-2)e8, 1b-3e24
LH--11.3 2b, 2.1 3b, 4.6 HR, 18 BB 424/525/750, 1.275 OPS
RH--7.8 2b, 3.5 3b, 6.5 HR, 10 BB 319/388/673, 1.061 OPS
"Old Reliable" was 6th in the MVP vote, Leading the League in Runs and Triples, Well Balanced for a LH, Better than Current Card, Good defense at multiple spots

1962 Al Kaline, DET, Bats-R, E Balance, RF-1(-4)e6
LH--8.3 2b, 1.2 3b, 10.5 HR, 22 BB 346/479/837, 1.316 OPS
RH--7.7 2b, 2.6 3b, 11.8 HR, 9 BB 251/405/836, 1.241 OPS
Kaline has 3 cards, but this card would showcase HR power, almost doubling HR totals from his 1955 card.
Might be an interesting addition to Tigers teams.

1954 Minnie Minoso, CWS, Bats-R, 1R Balance, LF-1(-2)e9, RF-2(-2)e9, CF-3(-2)e8, 3b-4e26
LH--2.6 2b, 5.2 3b, 2.2 HR, 13 BB 397/503/617, 1.120 OPS
RH--6.7 2b, 4.9 3b, 5.4 HR, 13 BB 409/513/774, 1.287 OPS
4th in MVP Voting, Led League in Triples and Total Bases, LOTS of Triples, Great defense and eligible & playable at 3b. Better offensively than his 6.99m card.

1966 Mike Shannon, STL, Bats-R, 3L Balance, RF/LF-2(-2)e5, CF-3(-2)e5
LH--8.6 2b, 0.3 3b, 9.4 HR, 11 BB 370/434/755, 1.188 OPS
RH--2 2b, 2.6 3b, 2.7 HR, 8 BB 325/375/475, .850 OPS
Good platoon card against LHP, better representation for 3-time World Series participant

1958 Bob Skinner, PIT, Bats-L, E Balance, LF-4(+1)e7
LH--6.8 2b, 2.9 3b, 0.8 HR, 7 BB 396/441/546, .987 OPS
RH--7.6 2b, 2 3b, 4.3 HR, 10 BB 399/4661/649, 1.110 OPS
Finished 15th in MVP Voting, should be cheaper because of defense but can definitely hit.

1955 Al E. Smith, CLE, Bats-R, 1R Balance, RF/LF-2(-1)e8, CF-3(-1)e8, 3b-4e35, Steal:*5,6/-(15-6)
LH--4.3 2b, 1 3b, 2.7 HR, 14 BB 365/477/526, 1.003 OPS
RH--3.7 2b, 0 3b, 5.2 HR, 21 BB 404/547/639, 1.186 OPS
1950's spark plug, great OBP especially vs RHP, Led League in Runs, Finished 3rd in MVP voting

1956 Bill Virdon, PIT, Bats-L, 3R Balance, CF-1(-2)e6
LH--2.4 2b, 0.5 3b, 2.2 HR, 1 BB 315/328/409, .737 OPS
RH--4.9 2b, 3.5 3b, 1.2 HR, 2 BB 421/437/569, 1.006 OPS
Pirates CFer for over a decade, he needs a usable card, strong vs RHP

1962 Leon Wagner, CAL, Bats-L, 2R Balance, RF/LF-3(-2)e9
LH--6.4 2b, 0.5 3b, 4.2 HR, 5 BB 262/310/460, .771 OPS
RH--0.4 2b, 1.1 3b, 11.3 HR, 4 BB 268/308/623, .931 OPS
Daddy Wags gives the Post War Angels a power threat, More usable defensively than current 1966 card and more power.

Ron LeFlore:

1948 Al Zarilla, SLB, Bats-L, 1R Balance, LF/RF-3(-2)e15/CF-4(-2)e15
LH--9 2b, 1.4 3b, 0.6 HR, 0 BB 400/411/528, .939 OPS
RH--10.4 2b, 0 3b, 3.8 HR, 4 BB 400/433/612, 1.045 OPS

Zarilla had two good seasons in a 10 year career. This is one of them. Most of his career is more like his .85m card.

How about the 1963 Johnny Callison? 284/339/504 split is the best of both cards. Would imagine pretty decent defensively.

1965 Vic Davalillo. 301/344/372. 26 steals.

1956 Jim Piersall 293/350/449. 682 PA. 40 doubles

1954 Frank Thomas 298/359/497

1954 Frank Thomas 298/359/497

1963 Johnny Callison, PHI, Bats-L, 1L Balance, RF-1(-4)e2
LH--5.6 2b, 2 3b, 6.2 HR, 13 BB 370/452/670, 1.122 OPS
RH--8 2b, 2.8 3b, 6.4 HR, 4 BB 292/325/609, .933 OPS

Current 1964 Callison card, PHI, Bats-L, 1L Balance, RF-1(-4)e4, BULLETPROOF
LH-- 1.4 2b, 2.7 3b, 10.5 HR, 4 BB 327/365/703, 1.068 OPS
RH--7.4 2b, 2.1 3b, 8.8 HR, 2 BB 279/306/642, .948 OPS
Wow, there's really not a lot of difference between 1963 and the current 1964 card. 1964 has more HR power, 1963 a little better average/OBP vs LHP. Don't see much difference here.

1965 Vic Davalillo, CLE, Bats-L, 3R Balance, CF-2(+1)e5, Steal: *2-5/-(19-13)
LH--0 2b, 0 3b, 0 HR, 0 BB 312/312/312, .623 OPS
RH--5.5 2b, 0 3b, 3 HR, 3 BB 391/408/529, .937 OPS
Didn't post his scrub cards. This one is better, but where does he play? Not really strong enough to overcome that defense like a Combs or Ashburn. It's an improvement, don't know if I'd spend capital here on a card that's not gonna inspire with that CF defense.

1956 Jimmy Piersall, BOS, Bats-R, 3L Balance, CF-1(-1)e4
LH--16.2 2b, 1.6 3b, 3 HR, 14 BB 372/454/674, 1.128 OPS
RH--6.3 2b, 1 3b, 1.8 HR, 7 BB 329/372/462, .835 OPS
Not Bulletproof, but close. Led League in Doubles.

Current 1954 Piersall, BOS, Bats-R, 1L Balance, CF/RF-1(0)e6
LH--8.9 2b, 1 3b, 2.7 HR, 2 BB 345/363/524, .887 OPS
RH--5.2 2b, 0 3b, 1.2 HR, 6 BB 341/384/428, .812 OPS
What I like about adding this 1956 card: BOSTON Post subset CFers are NONEXISTENT, He's not an Injury worry, those Doubles.
I like it.

1954 Frank Thomas, PIT, Bats-R, E Balance, LF-3(0)e5, CF-4(0)e5
LH--5.3 2b, 1.8 3b, 4.8 HR, 6 BB 392/448/627, 1.075 OPS
RH--6.9 2b, 1.2 3b, 7.6 HR, 8 BB, 354/426/689, 1.114 OPS

Current 1956 Thomas, PIT, Bats-R, 2L Balance, 3b-4e30,2b-4e37, LF-4(+2)e4
LH--3.9 2b, 0 3b, 11.4 HR, 3 BB 398/426/768, 1.194 OPS
RH--3.8 2b, 0.6 3b, 6.3 HR, 3 BB 339/370/571, .941 OPS
He's more balanced in 1954 card, but more power in 1956, and his 1956 offense as a 3b is better to me than his 1954 offense in LF.

In 1958:
1958 Frank Thomas, PIT, Bats-R, 2L Balance, 3b-4e32, 1b-4e25, LF/RF-4(+2)e22
LH--4.3 2b, 0 3b, 15.1 HR, 13 BB 325/431/870, 1.301 OPS
RH--4.4 2b, 1 3b, 9 HR, 4 BB 329/373/660, 1.033 OPS
This one is an improved current 1956. Plus, he can play 1b. Still, if I wanted a Pirates 1950s 1b, I'd want 1959 Dick Stuart.

But the best reason to like Thomas is this story:
Richie Ashburn and Frank Thomas ended up with the Mets for their embarrassing 1962 inaugural season. One oft-told story is that on short flies to center or left-center, center fielder Ashburn would collide with shortstop Elio Chacón. Chacón, from Venezuela, spoke little English and had difficulty understanding when Ashburn was calling him off the ball. To remedy matters teammate Joe Christopher taught Ashburn to say "Yo la tengo", Spanish for "I’ve got it." When Ashburn first used this phrase it worked fine, keeping Chacón from running into him. But then left fielder Frank Thomas, who did not speak a word of Spanish, slammed into Ashburn. After getting up Thomas asked Ashburn, "What the heck is a Yellow Tango?"

Do you want more power or more batting average/OBP? The fact he can play 1b in both years definitely helps. No need comparing him to his current cards, they are scrub cards. These are his two best seasons, he had a very short career as far as being a starter. He's not too bad an add, does he ever play LF over Billy Williams or 1b over Hank Sauer with the CHC post subset? Not a bad bat.

RH--3 2b, 1.1 3b, 4.3 HR, 18 BB 317/431/514, .945 OPS

I like Maxwell, he's on my bigger list. My only problem, he never came close to duplicating this 1956 season. But he was a good solid Tiger for 7-8 seasons, and I think he deserves a better card than our current one.

His 1957 season is more in line with his career, but his defense in 1957 is terrible, he'd never get used.
