Post War Infielders---IMPROVEMENT Edition

PostMon Feb 25, 2019 10:58 pm

Many have said that we don't know what we are getting when we nominate cards, so I've taken some time to put some stats together from some cards, using Diamond Dope and Veterans 1975 for the park, since it's kind of neutral (10,10,10,10). I asked Bill for his permission/blessing to do this. So I'll be posting some card add ideas, thoughts, etc to hopefully keep interest up and give folks some stuff to actually discuss on the boards.

My Goals on IMPROVEMENTS:
1--Provide a card that is more representative of a player's career than their current card(s)
2--Provide a card that is fundamentally different than their current cards

1962 Jerry Adair, BAL, Bats-R, 1L Balance, 2b-2e23, SS-3e24, 3b-3e37
LH--10.1 2b, 0.4 3b, 2.8 HR, 0 BB 310/317/489, .806 OPS
RH--8.4 2b, 1 3b, 1 HR, 2 BB 305/325/433, .757 OPS
Early 60s Orioles 2b, good Double numbers

1959 Frank Bolling, DET, Bats-R, 2R Balance, 2b-1e11
LH--3.2 2b, 0 3b, 1 HR, 20 BB 232/395/305, .700 OPS
RH--3.1 2b, 1.2 3b, 3.3 HR, 6 BB 330/386/484, .870 OPS
Fine Tigers and Braves 2b, great defense and much better bat than our current card, good stick vs RHP, good OPB vs LHP

1966 Donn Clendenon, PIT, Bats-R, 1L Balance, 1b-2e26
LH--1.1 2b, 3.6 3b, 10.1 HR, 6 BB 400/438/782, 1.220 OPS
RH--4.2 2b, 2.3 3b, 8.8 HR, 12 BB 349/421/713, 1.134 OPS
Strong 1960s 1b for Pirates, and was a catalyst for 1969 Mets. His current cards and not that great: This one is.

1959 Johnny Logan, MIL, Bats-R, 3L Balance, SS-2e21
LH--3.2 2b, 0 3b, 2.8 HR, 25 BB 488/611/627, 1.239 OPS
RH--2.2 2b, 0 3b, 2.8 HR, 9 BB 351/411/458, .869 OPS
Braves SS for almost all the 1950s, this card is much better than current cards and provides strong OBP & Defense

1959 Dick Stuart, PIT, Bats-R, 3L balance, 1b-4e30, LF-4(+3)e16
LH--4.6 2b, 0 3b, 13.5 HR, 12 BB 443/510/917, 1.427 OPS
RH--2.4 2b, 0.9 3b, 11.5 HR, 8 BB 349/403/740, 1.143 OPS
His 1b defense is not so "strange" with this card, and CHECK OUT the POWER. You want this card.

1950 Earl Torgeson, BSB, Bats'L, 1R Balance, 1b-4e22, Steal: *6-7/-(15-11)
LH--6.1 2b, 0.2 3b, 5 HR, 15 BB 272/373/502, .875 OPS
RH--3.9 2b, 0 3b, 5.4 HR, 25 BB 322/479/564, 1.092 OPS
The Earl of Snohomish led the League in Runs. Here's a player who had the combination of speed, OBP, and power before people knew its true value...………..

1961 Siebern, KCA, Bats-L, 4R Balance, 1b-3e17, LF-4(+1)e4
LH--9 2b, 1.4 3b, 0.2 HR, 11 BB 229/308/355, .663 OPS
RH--7.5 2b, 0.6 3b, 5.7 HR, 18 BB 394/495/679, 1.175 OPS

1962 Siebern, KCA, Bats-L, 1R Balance, 1b-2e10, BULLETPROOF
LH--5.4 2b, 0.2 3b, 3.4 HR, 18 BB 342/451/519, .971 OPS
RH--2 2b, 1.5 3b, 6.3 HR, 22 BB 368/497/644, 1.141 OPS

Obviously, the 1962 card is better than 1961. The guy who the Yankees traded for Maris. 7th in MVP Voting in 62.

Current 1960 Siebern, KCA, Bats-L,
LH--9.1 2b, 0.8 3b, 0.9 HR, 10 BB 361/426/498, .924 OPS
RH-- 6.7 2b, 1.5 3b, 6.1 HR, 14 BB 321/415/622, 1.037 OPS

When you look at the current card we have compared to the 62 card, is 1962 THAT much better than 1960? That said, the A's Post are weak and could use another card. With improvements, I'm usually thinking of a player who is poorly represented or a card that is fundamentally different in some way from his current card. 1962 Siebern doesn't fit those parameters, but if he was added it wouldn't be a big deal......

I really like the '62 Richardson. A huge
improvement.

I would much prefer the 61 Stuart to the '59 Stuart and have wanted that card for a long time. I've also wanted the '62 Seiburn, a great addition.

I crunched the numbers on those two, Bruce. I’ll post when I get back around a computer. His defensive numbers in 1961 make usable only as DH. And if memory serves, offense was better with the 1959 card.

But what about the injuries, lots more plate appears in '61 (576?) vs low 400's in '59 and has natural hr's on 1-8 and 1-9 vs righties in '61 Too many guys like him already mash lefties. I also prefer his 1B 5 card - he may have been the worst fielder ever, more representative of his actual "skills."

Also desperately want the '69 Mike Epstein. When SOM offered the online 1969 season, his card was "Super Jew." Had an epic season for that year.

Finally, the '64 Mantilla. Plays five positions and hit 30 hrs in 400 ab's. https://365.strat-o-matic.com/player/37496/1660/1/60

Epstein is listed in the Expansion C-1b No Card thread.

I’ll post the 61 Stuart. I probably ran from him because of his defense. These threads are just for our information before we actually make picks/nominations and end up with cards we thought we wanted, but sometimes disappoint.

1961 Dick Stuart, PIT, Bats-R, 1L Balance, 1b-5e25, LF-5(+3)e16
LH—8.8 2b, 4.2 3b, 10 HR, 7 BB 391/442/868, 1.309 OPS
RH—4.6 2b, 1 3b, 13.2 HR, 4 BB 343/380/795, 1.174 OPS

I don’t think there’s a lot of difference offensively between the two. Depends on if you want a card with a 15 game injury chance (1959) or a card that is only playable at DH.
