EXPANSION (1967-1998) Outfielders--NO CARD Edition

PostFri Mar 01, 2019 1:43 pm

Many have said that we don't know what we are getting when we nominate cards, so I've taken some time to put some stats together from some cards, using Diamond Dope and Veterans 1975 for the park, since it's kind of neutral (10,10,10,10). I asked Bill for his permission/blessing to do this. So I'll be posting some card add ideas, thoughts, etc to hopefully keep interest up and give folks some stuff to actually discuss on the boards.

1998 Derek Bell, HOU, Bats-R, 3L Balance, RF-2(-2)e9
LH--11.7 2b, 1 3b, 5.7 HR, 8 BB 432/474/740, 1.214 OPS
RH--6.3 b, 0 3b, 3.8 HR, 8 BB 357/411/534, .944 OPS
Exciting outfielder for mid/late 1990s Astros

1990 Glenn Braggs, CIN, Bats-R, 2L Balance, RF/LF-4(+1)e13
LH--0 2b, 1.6 3b, 5 HR, 21 BB 383/500/600, 1.120 OPS
RH--9.3 2b, 0 3b, 2.3 HR, 9 BB 304/381/471, .853 OPS
Good Platoon player for Reds in their 1990 WS journey, robbed Carmelo Martinez in Game 6 of NLCS to help beat Pirates, then walked in the game-tying run in World Series Game 4 once he entered the game as Eric Davis' replacement when Davis dove for Willie McGee's hit in the first inning and lacerated his kidney. Reds went on to their sweep when next batter Hal Morris drove in the go ahead run with a sac fly to RF.

1969 Ollie Brown, SD, Bats-R, 5L Balance, RF-2(-4)e8
LH--0 2b, 1.2 3b, 12 HR, 14 BB 366/454/778, 1.232 OPS
RH--3.4 2b, 0.2 3b, 3.2 HR, 5 BB 260/301/389, .690 OPS
Powerful Padre Platoon Player. (Alliteration) Nice power vs LHP and strong RF arm.

1997 Jeromy Burnitz, MIL, Bats-L, 3R Balance, RF/LF-3(-1)e8, CF-4(-1)e8
LH--8.1 2b, 1 3b, 2.8 HR, 7 BB 285/345/471, .816 OPS
RH--8.5 2b, 2.8 3b, 10.7 HR, 18 BB 294/425/819, 1.244 OPS
Power hitter for Brewers, this card is much better than his 1998 card. His 1999 card is more balanced but it is a 4 INJ.
Listed below for reference, but cards with that high an INJ don't get used unless they offset the INJ chance by awesomeness. He isn't.
99 Burnitz, MIL, Bats-L, E Balance, RF-2(-3)e7
LH--8 2b, 0.6 3b, 9.3 HR, 26 BB 240/472/735, 1.207 OPS
RH--6.6 2b, 0 3b, 10.2 HR, 18 BB 270/439/718, 1.157 OPS

1984 Dave Collins, TOR, Bats-S, E Balance, LF/CF-4(+1)e3, 1b-4e22, Steal: *2-6,9/-(19-15)
LH--7.5 2b, 5.7 3b, 0 HR, 1 BB 347/377/531, .908 OPS
RH--5.7 2b, 5.7 3b, 1 HR, 7 BB 330/398/537, .935 OPS
Reds, then Blue Jays speedy Outfielder. Led League in Triples. Lots of Speed and EXBH, might make a good small ball 1b/OF.

1997 Rusty Greer, TEX, Bats-L, E Balance, LF/RF-2(-1)e13, CF-3(-1)e13
LH--10.7 2b, 0 3b, 4.1 HR, 20 BB 368/488/629, 1.117 OPS
RH--6.4 2b, 0.6 3b, 5 HR, 13 BB 395/474/636, 1.109 OPS
1990s Rangers favorite, played on 3 AL West Champions, Good Player, needs a card, Rangers exp needs him.
His 1996 card is a notch below this one.

1998 Brian Jordan, STL, Bats-R, 3L Balance, RF/CF-2(-1)e11, 3b-4e37, Steal:*5,6/-(17-12)
LH--14.1 2b, 3.4 3b, 5.1 HR, 5 BB 439/480/798, 1.278 OPS
RH--3.7 2b, 1.5 3b, 6.1 HR, 6 BB 352/406/605, 1.011 OPS
Two Sport Star, no card in the set, should be represented.

1979 Steve Kemp, DET, Bats-L, E Balance, LF-3(+1)e8, RF-4(+1)e8
LH--5.2 2b, 0 3b, 6.5 HR, 12 BB 387/461/647, 1.107 OPS
RH--5.1 2b, 1 3b, 8 HR, 19 BB 335/458/689, 1.147 OPS
Great 1979 season for Tigers, drafted in 1976 from USC, started for the Tigers in 1977

1987 Candy Maldonado, SF, Bats-R, E Balance, RF/LF-3(-3)e7
LH--7.6 2b, 1 3b, 5.7 HR, 10 BB 318/400/598, .998 OPS
RH--7.6 2b, 1.4 3b, 5.9 HR, 4 BB 326/369/602, .972 OPS
Outfielder for fun late 80s Giants teams. Balanced, good arm

1977 Mitchell Page, OAK, Bats-L, 4R Balance, LF/RF-4(+2)e18
LH--1 2b, 0 3b, 3.5 HR, 26 BB 299/481/443, .923 OPS
RH--7.3 2b, 3.3 3b, 6.6 HR, 15 BB 391/487/760, 1.247 OPS
I remember that card, finished 2nd in ROY to Eddie Murray. People are always asking for this card. Fun Offense vs RHP. Terrible, unusable defense. He's a DH.

1981 Gene Richards, SD, Bats-L, E Balance, LF-4(0)e8, Steal: *2-5,11/-(17-13)
LH--0 2b, 6.6 3b, 0.5 HR, 16 BB 307/416/468, .884 OPS
RH--4.9 2b, 4.1 3b, 1.3 HR, 15 BB 313/414/495, .909 OPS
Triples from the League Leader. Popular Padre back in the day, good speed.

1977 Tony Scott, STL, Bats-S, 2L Balance, LF/CF/RF-2(0)e2
LH--12.2 2b, 0.8 3b, 1.3 HR, 12 BB 338/424/524, .948 OPS
RH--1.5 2b, 1.2 3b, 1 HR, 10 BB 289/368/360, .728 OPS
Cheaper Platoon option, Cardinals and Astros

Frank asked about Shane Mack.

1992 Shane Mack, MIN, Bats-R, E Balance, LF/RF-1(-1)e4, CF-2(-1)e4, Steal: *2-7,10/-(15-13)
LH--9.4 2b, 4 3b, 3.8 HR, 6 BB 324/393/618, 1.011 OPS
RH--3.5 2b, 0.6 3b, 2.5 HR, 12 BB 390/486/524, 1.010 OPS
Good defense at multiple spots, good speed, part of Twins 1991 championship.

1994 Shane Mack, MIN, Bats-R, 5L Balance, LF-1(0)e4, CF-2(0)e4
LH--13.1 2b, 1.8 3b, 8.4 HR, 11 BB 502/571/953, 1.524 OPS
RH--5.6 2b, 0.2 3b, 5.5 HR, 10 BB 362/444/601, 1.045 OPS

I think 1992 is a good card and very representative of Mack's career. That 1994 card is not, and I don't really want Shane Mack up there with Heilmann and Medwick.

Rusty Greer, Ollie Brown and Shane Mack would all get my votes. Excellent choices.

It seems a shame that Mack Jones doesn't have a card. How about 1969:
G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO HBP SH SF IBB DP AVG OBP SLG OPS
135 455 73 123 23 5 22 79 6 7 67 110 15 1 4 8 11 .270 .379 .488 .867

That was over 36 At Bats and a guy with 156 Plate Appearances for his career. Nope.

I'm 100% with Andy on this. Not looking to add any more 'unleashed' type cards.
