2003 Marlins "Extras"

PostSun Mar 24, 2019 6:15 pm

With the 2003 Marlins ahead 33-9 in the voting, it appears we can safely declare a winner in this race.

Looks like we can easily accommodate 4 'at large' position players and 3 additional relief pitchers (Marlins only have one reliever in ATG).

Suggested Extras:

1997 Edgar Renteria SS 1 e19 (Marlins already have better offensive SS in Hanley Ramirez - I think the "1" version of Renteria is a better fit than the 1996 version also mentioned). Also adds a 1997 WS team card.

1995 Chuck Carr CF 1 +1 e6 A *2-6,11/ (17-15) 1-17 6L (Pairs with current 2004 Juan Pierre card)

2014/2017 Giancarlo Stanton (comparison in Marlins Vote thread). Either card is a good add. The 2017 has more HRs; 2014 adds SBs, some speed.

1996 Alex Arias (good utility IF, original Marlin, need another cheap card)

1993 Bryan Harvey RP - Marlins first all-star, CY-8 MVP-14, seems like a good candidate for one of the relief spots. 7L righty, 1.70era 0.84whip

1997 Jay Powell RP - 4R righty card appears to be a good choice for another relief spot. R2, 3.28era 1.26whip (adds another 1997 card)

1999 Antonio Alfonseca RP - 1L righty (6 years w/Marlins) - 3.24era 1.39whip, should be reasonably priced bullpen option

Core 2003 team:

1 C Ivan Rodriguez
2 1B Derrek Lee
3 2B X - Luis Castillo (already in) - substitute
4 SS Alex Gonzalez
5 3B Mike Lowell
6 LF Todd Hollandsworth*
7 CF X - Juan Pierre* (similar 2004 Marlins card in ATG) - substitute
8 RF Juan Encarnacion

9 UT Miguel Cabrera
10 LF Brian Banks#
11 C Mike Redmond
12 UT Andy Fox* (sub more useful 2002 cheap card)

1 SP Carl Pavano
2 SP Brad Penny
3 SP Mark Redman
4 SP Dontrelle Willis
5 SP Josh Beckett

6 CL Braden Looper
7 RP Michael Tejera
8 RP Armando Almanza (sub 5L 2000 better cheap card - 2003 card is pretty bad)

Because you list 7 players for 7 slots, are you just looking for thoughts on Stanton 2014 vs 2017? I vote 2017.

Not at all. Those are my suggestions for the seven slots, not necessarily the final outcome.

Thanks,

Soon we'll have hundreds of suggestions. Here are 3 I like.

2017 Ozuna LF 2(-2) 5 4R 926 OPS

I think someone also mentioned 2001 Cliff Floyd. No card. 317 390 578 968 OPS

Delgado 2005 301 399 582 981 OPS. 6th in MVP One Toronto card

Not really looking for 100 suggestions, thanks. Hoping for more along the lines of, this is why I think this would be a good addition to what the Marlins already have and the 2003 core team.

The primary goal is to make the Marlins viable as a franchise, so we need to make sure to include enough cheaper cards across multiple positions in the add.

I would choose Stanton over Ozuna for a higher priced card. Re Delgado, he only played one season for the Marlins, so he doesn't seem to be the best candidate for the team add. Really looking for players who represent the franchise better.

Note: 2001 Cliff Floyd was already voted in with the 19.2 add.

Thanks,
Bill

And is Ozuna the guy who produced that line in 2017, or is he the guy who has hit 280/320/440 for every other season of his career?

Cliff Floyd got voted in with 19.2

We could always put in the 2014 Ozuna instead.

Well, in general, that's why I personally don't like extremely recent card adds. We haven't seen how the careers of some of these guys will play out. Arrieta, for example had ONE awesome season in a career of mediocrity, yet because he had one awesome season, he is one of the 20 highest salaried SPs in the set, better than any Seaver, Carlton, Gibson, Clemens, Marichal, Unit, Gooden, Nolan Ryan, etc.

That's what happens when we add outliers: historically great players with historic, consistent careers are passed up by the likes of Luis Gonzalez and Jake Arrieta and their extreme outlier seasons...………….
