I tend to disagree, I think it was the first half way decent marketing concept they've come up with in ... well ... maybe ever.
Gets people to buy teams to try to win the freebies. They give away 7 freebies and seems like there was enough interest to sell a lot more than 7 teams. And so long as it works, there is no limit to the number of categories they can reward.
You could still be right, but I think it'll stick around. Only time will tell.
