ATG9 - Net Reduction in Salaries

PostFri Nov 29, 2019 2:02 pm

In the Survey posted by SOM a few weeks ago, they asked about re-pricing all of the cards. From my POV, this is a priority as ATG8 pricing is a mess that has degraded the game and chased away new players.

Savvy managers stock up on the under-priced players ('62 Tommy David, '01 or '04 Nap Lajoie, '59 Smoky Burgess, '58 Richie Ashburn, etc.) enabling them to build 90-100M teams in 80M cap leagues. Meanwhile, there is vast pool of famous, but over-priced players that don't get used much.

Below, I've posted a list of CFs with "suggested" ATG9 salaries*. Overall, there is a net drop of 18.50M in salary for the 141 cards in the list (an average of .13M per card).

==============================================
* Note, salaries in the list are what I would consider, "first draft." When I've done salaries in the past, there is quite a bit more "massaging," before they were finalized

12.99 -- '56 Mickey Mantle, CF (13.97) –98
12.73 -- NeL Oscar Charleston, CF (12.89)
12.56 -- '12 Tris Speaker, CF (11.91) +65
12.56 -- '57 Mickey Mantle, CF (13.01) –47
12.08 -- '94 Hugh Duffy, CF (11.75) +33
11.80 -- '61 Mickey Mantle, CF (12.07) –27
11.70 -- '62 Willie Mays, CF (12.69) –99
11.67 -- '11 Ty Cobb, CF (11.41)
11.51 -- '41 Joe Dimaggio, CF (11.57)
11.34 -- '39 Joe Dimaggio, CF (10.01) +1.33
10.77 -- '65 Willie Mays, CF (11.69) –92
10.75 -- '13 Mike Trout, CF (10.51)
10.45 -- NeL Turkey Stearnes, CF (10.41)
10.37 -- '11 Matt Kemp, CF (10.19)
10.24 -- '53 Duke Snider, CF (10.70) –46
10.10 -- '54 Willie Mays, CF (10.83) –73
10.05 -- '12 Ty Cobb, CF (9.99)
10.02 -- '57 Willie Mays, CF (11.11) –1.09
10.00 -- '55 Willie Mays, CF (10.42) –42

The cards with negative numbers (in Red), like Mantle & Mays are currently over-priced and would see their salaries go down. Players with + numbers (in Blue) like '12 Speaker or '39 Dimaggio would see their salaries go up.

So what methodology was used to determine the "suggested" repricing?

A cautionary note: pricing irregularities are not necessarily a bad thing. A big part of general managing a team is spotting value and that is one of the more fun aspects of team building.

I think repricing needs to address a couple of key issues. One is making cards, such as those mentioned in the initial post on this thread, more expensive. There are less than 50 cards in the entire set that I consider grossly underpriced and these cards get used far too frequently. The flip side of this issue is cards that are overpriced to the point of almost never getting used. So ideally a repricing would correct these imbalances. But for the vast majority of the cards a price randomizer of +/- 5% of current pricing could be used, to create new values and breathe new life into an old game.
