Riggo, r the error numbers the actual number of errors the player committed? i know for part time and injured players its estimated on if they played a full season.

I saw Evans play 3b quite a bit, and never saw ANYTHING that even remotely make me think he was a "1".

What difference does historical accuracy make?

This is a game. We all know it has flaws. But all the ratings and card data are public knowledge.

Same here and I agree with your assessment of his fielding ability. Remember what Mark Twain said about "lies, damn lies, and sabermetrics"

As far as DiMaggio is concerned I always remember what the Scooter would say about him that he was always in the right spot. He didn't have Mickey or Willies speed to run down balls but always seemed to be playing the hitter in the correct area. All the old-timers say he was the best of his generation but lets face it the athletes of today are so much quicker and athletic . Im sure Joe D was a "1" defensively in his era and so he should remain a "1"in the game.

Thanks for the great work....some very nice observations and recommendations. I totally agree that fielding changes to ATG should be relatively easy to make and would improve the game. ATG 8 is in dire need of a SIGNIFICANT UPGRADE rather than a new group of cards that rarely get used.

Responding to a few of the comments above...

Errors for SOM cards are normalized to full season. Error ratings are the number of errors at the position, normalized to an entire season. For example, if a player played 90% of his team's innings at 3B and committed 9 errors, he error rating would be e10.

===============================================

Errors should only be adjusted in obvious/egregious cases. I agree with the points made about Darrell Evans and Joe DiMaggio.

For Darrell Evans, my recommendation would be to change those ratings for '73 and '74 to 2e25 and 2e27. I think there's ample evidence that he was a good fielder (you can lookup Bill James comments on him), but nobody remembers him as a gold-glove fielding whiz.

For DiMaggio, I wouldn't mess with the current "1" ratings (with the possible exception of the 1948 card).
