However, based on that long ago experience with HAL, I'd program Bonds to be a defensive replacement in LF and see what happens. Perhaps HAL would leave him in the game

I tried that before last night's series. No dice. Stupid HAL.

I see three crappy alternatives:

    • Drop Gipson and hope HAL doesn't start replacing Bonds with another cheap 2 outfielder like Howard.

    • Follow Marc's suggestion and set Gipson as the replacement for Combs (no guarantee that HAL will follow orders here when he sees Barry in LF)

    • Move Bonds to DH (screws up my DH platoon), start 3.80 Garr, who is a 4(+1)e11, in LF and let HAL obsessively replace him instead.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions!

I probably will do that, but it screws up my Cardenal/Garr platoon at DH. Best of the bad options, I guess.

Not sure why you say so, Cardenal has a card in lf, and 7 innings of Cardenal + 2 innings of Gipson as lh replacement is defensively better than leaving Bonds there for 9 innings.

If you go this way, I would make sure there is no def-2 on the bench.

From my own experience, having Bonds started perhaps 50 games in lf, Hal rarely replaced Bonds on his own, perhaps twice for the whole season, but my bench mainly has outfielders with 4 range. On both occasions, Vaughn (4e4(+1)) replaced Bonds (4e5 +2). Strangely, Hal never used Gainey who I sometimes have on the bench despite his better rating of 2e16.

Yep, just figured that out earlier today! So I’m all good. Now if someone could help HAL see the error of his ways, that’d be great.
