And again if you can only set a guy for 2 roles, he's still not going to get used every time.

Given the snail speed of SOM doing anything, I don't see it happening soon. I'm agnostic about the issue -- will adjust to whatever the rules are. Value will always be found :)

I understand certain (or even most) people don't like the" super reliever" strategy, because it is unrealistic... However, no one cares about Ross Barnes and Hugh Duffy and these players from the 1800s with batting averages like .440 .430..... If anything why couldn't an ace of today, (2020) pitch 200 innings out of the bullpen. There would be a much greater likelihood of a well conditioned pitcher pitching more than 200 innings in relief than there is of anyone batting .440, let alone guys like Duffy, and Barnes hitting .440 in 2020 MLB.

Look I don't really care what they do with relievers, as long as we all play by the rules.... But if your only argument is, it is unrealistic, take a number.

You put in two R1 relievers and mark avoid lefties avoid righties

That's not possible. You can only choose one.

Seems to me one impact will be the use of "pure closers" in ATG.

In the spirit of the super-reliever, the 2 roles we can assign a reliever to have to be middle reliever and set-up. This will leave the closer role open, and besides, relievers getting tired faster (20% pitch count reduction) will probably cause R3 relievers to be less likely to finish the game. R4 will probably be able to close the game, but they will need an extra day of relief more often.

Middle: Sutter
Set-up: Sutter
Closer: Eckersley
Tied 9th inning: Eckersley

WIll pitch 300 innings easily with no other settings especially if you have R5 starters. Other alternative is now the 4 stud philosophy becomes even more valuable, as directing the relievers will be more of a crapshoot if you use more than one.

Wouldn't that 300 inning R1 pitcher would be entering every game at F0 based on that?

you are missing the point you have to have three relivers Dale Murray is the third the R1’s will never be used, you wont need any roles

one r1 is avoid lefties one is avoid righties, supposing you have something like crawford and sambito with dale murray. pitch count only issue on 2nd day. 2 R9 studs solve most problems pitched every other game…

Ok, I see. Still, the SOM note says that relievers with a very long outing will need two days of rest. So the team you show as an example will be exposed to the great risk of not having Murray ready for one of the two games where you don't have a S9

My initial thought is that you can't afford two S9 studs AND Murray

What are the chances the code revisions have unintended consequences that make Dale Murray's usage inconsequential by comparison?
