Contract extensions take effect prior to the start of season 1 and count toward the inaugural salary cap.

I disagree with this as we are signing these players with a contract already in place for 2019.We sign these players knowing what they are paid just like in real baseball.I agree that as soon as draft is over the owners must negotiate all contracts/arb's for upcoming seasons .I know we cannot get complete realization of the real thing but post phoning till mid season when all owners have an idea what every player is doing the next season is not the way to go.

seems to me the current draft is to set a league starting point, or baseline (haha). So in essence, we are drafting players that are already under one year contracts already negotiated. There can't be free-agency or arbitration after the draft because everyone is already under contract for the upcoming season. I also don't think you can cut anyone after the draft (unless you eat their salary this year).

The easiest way to handle the timing issue and actually, the way I thought we were doing it all along, is to make the contract decisions for all players right after the draft before our league starts up. That would make it the most like real life. Players contracts for the 2020 season would be in place before the real life season would be played as it should be. The only difference as Paul pointed out in an earlier post is that with players you have declared as going to arbitration you will not know the exact amount of their contract until the cards are released next year. We are making the decision on contract extensions for the 6+ players right after the draft without the knowledge of their upcoming real life seasons. Why not do that with everybody?

So the decisions after the draft become what's listed out on page 4. For example, a guy with more than 6 years, we either extend now, after the draft, or he plays this year at his current salary, then becomes a free agent. Same with 3-5 year guys, extend now, after the draft,or he plays under is current salary this year, and we take our chances in arbitration after the season, or cut him after the season because he has less than 6 years.

The effects of the initial draft will lessen as the seasons go forward, as the salary structure conforms more to what's in the rules, I believe.

Make no mistake, I COULD BE WAY OFF HERE!

I think we're having a misunderstanding. The contracts are already in place for the 2019 season just as you say. It's next year's contracts that I'm talking about. Those are the ones that are being decided after the initial draft. It's the players contracts for 2020 season (and beyond if getting a multi year extension) that I'm saying should be done now. You don't give a player a contract to cover how he did in 2020 after the season is over. You give it to him before the season starts based on how you think he will do. Is this making any sense to anybody?

The issue Randy is raising about timing is a good one, as it would be possible to cut a player with the full knowledge of how they performed during the season. This is a big advantage if the player suffers a career ending injury. I understand the limitation and am open to discussion of moving the decision date back, perhaps to the mid-season Supplemental Free Agent signing period? While we would still have a half season of information to act on, it would increase the difficulty of the decision making process. Thoughts?

Just read this and my thoughts are while mid season would be better than end of season, pre- season would be better still and most mirror the real life situation. If a team signs Juan Soto let's say to a multi year deal that team is agreeing to that deal without knowing whether he will suffer a serious injury, completely go in the tank performance wise etc. They definitely don't get to say well let's wait till mid season to see how he's going to do before signing the deal. That's the way I see it. I'm not trying to be difficult or anything and I'm really looking forward to this league and think you've come up with a great new idea for a strat league.

i joined this league knowing the potholes we were going to through.I played in a league where we done this and much more lol for over 12 years. This is the 1st time i believe ,Strat on linethat this is going to be done. First of all congrates to the "COMMISSIONER" our own "Bud Seiling" for doing this,I know the amount of time and effort required,"THANK-YOU!!!!! Next: this is not a race so no need to make rash and sudden amendments....i like the fact we are a group that speaks out and "BUD" is giving us all feedback and not leaving us out in the dark. This is a league that I would be in every year and thoroughly enjoy playing
We should be allowed to announce as of right now.... players that we are going to sign to extensions and contracts just like in real life. This would add to our league chatter, as i would of done in signing MANNY MACHADO i wud of extended him right away to a 5 year deal which would mean i now control that player for the next 6 seasons. So i have "taken care of buisness" right away and not spent 4 weeks just drafting and now must do 40 players .... negotiating contracts and extensions. This allows all owners a great amount of time to really think about what they want to do in shaping their team. Again this is just a thought......

I've been trying to reply on my phone but I seem to have failed to post it.

Immediately after the draft we will be extending contracts of players with 3+ years of service, so we will be extending for 2020 and beyond. I' not sure I am understanding the confusion.

the confusion is that you get to wait to decide if you want to go to arbitration or simply cut a guy...you get to wait until after the real 2020 season has played out and thus you get a good idea of whether it's worth it to cut him or not.

I think that's it, but not sure.

My understanding is this is what we will be doing, and in fact you can do this. You could probably do it today, even though it might be better to see how the rest of your roster shapes up. Otherwise you could get in trouble with cap limitations.

It seems like everyone is on the same page, more or less, we're just coming from different directions in getting to the same place.

To make it easy i would like to see a"KEEPER CONTRACT/Arbs thread where we can post extensions creating a record for all to see and allowing the commish to enter these at his own pace at these times on his computer.
