Is Closer C6 anymore valuable than C3?

PostMon Mar 23, 2020 11:08 am

What's the point of paying for C6 instead of a C3 guy? Ideally, a C6 stud should pitch the 8th and 9th for a save, however HAL doesn't bring closers in until the 9th. When I set my closer for closer as well as setup and don't bring in until the 8th, HAL will bring him in in the 8th (as a "setup"), but then he fatigues in the 9th, before he's faced 6 batters. Is this part of the new bullpen code? Is there some clever strategy to use?

Hey Glenn,

I wouldn't set a C6 for setup/close unless they also have the R2.

A C6 is worth it, pitching in the 9th.
He will last longer than a C3.

Pay attention to the R.

Darin,

The Strat page for reading a card doesn't even mention closer ratings (https://365.strat-o-matic.com/help/pitchercard).
However this page gives a good explanation: https://somonline.fandom.com/wiki/Strat ... Game_Rules

So, what I see is that any pitcher who is a C3 - C6 should be able to close the 9th, since the "C" rating is the number of outs. If the closer gives up runs and the game goes to a 10th, the C3 is gassed and the C6 can still pitch - but how often does this happen?

To get 2 innings out of a R1/C6, using him in the 8th - 9th sounds like a good strategy by the rules on the wiki page. He can pitch the 8th as an R1, and then convert to a closer in the 9th with 3 outs still in his tank. At least that's my thought.

Not an expert in this area but couldn't the C3 come in the 8th in a closer situation? Then the R1 wouldn't matter and then he'd be fatigued going into the 9th.

With a C6 put him in the top two spots in the queue as closer and set-up. Then check the do not come in before 8th. Then unless you got someone coming into the 8th who you have a F8 label on, there is a very good chance he finishes the final two innings when you have a lead and it is close. I have used it somewhat effectively, though making sure your settings dont conflict here is like herding cats.

I could be wrong but it appears the 2019 player set no longer provides for a pitcher to be in 2 roles.

If he's coming in the game in the 9th--you're right--a C3 closer is good enough.

you are. They can have two rolls, just can't have more than two anymore. In ATG you can set a "super reliever" first in every roll (closer, setup, mid, tied and late, extra innings , behind and late)

They can have 2 roles but no more. In previous years they could have more than 2.

For just a bit longer.
