Read everything in the General Strategy section of the forums. Especially the archived stuff from TSN. That's what I did when I started

Suggestions:

1. Exploit home park to the hilt

In Strat, 50% of the rolls are off of the batter's card and 50% are off of the pitcher's card. There are 108 results on the batter's card and 0-8 are homerun ballpark chances and 0-5 are ballpark singles chances. So a power hitter might have 8 BP chances, meaning that 8 out of 108 times a 20 sided die roll will be made and the result based on the ballpark (so a ballpark that is great for homeruns like Polo Grounds will give a homerun every time these ballpark chances come up whereas a pitcher's park might give up very few or none.) Ballparks are rated 0-20 for ballpark singles for righties and lefties and 0-20 for ballpark homeruns for righties and lefties. So a park like the Polo Grounds'41 with 0 0 for singles and 20 20 gives up no ballpark singles and a homerun every time a ballpark homerun chance comes up. So, one way you could exploit that is by loading up on power hitters and then getting pitchers who give up none or few bp homeruns. If you have a ballpark that does not give homeruns you might go with batting average guys, speed guys or both.

3. Get the best pitching you can get and platoon

I don't really play ATG but I remember the simple advice from one very successful player in ATG: get the best pitching you can get and platoon. There are a lot of cards in ATG and you can guys that crush each side of the plate. By platooning you can get a very powerful offense.

4. Defense

30 out of the 108 chances on your pitcher's card are actually based on your defense. 7 SS, 6 2b, 3 3b, 2 1b, 3 c, 2 lf, 3cf, 2 rf, 2 p. Your defensive playere are rated 1-5 fielding and you get throwing ratings for the outfield. As a general rule you have to be at least wary of having less than a 1 or 2 at SS, 2b or CF. And you could use defense as a strategy, too. Say you have a pitcher's park that does not give up BP singles or BP homeruns. Then you get a great pitching staff...and then you get a great defense. You may have really starved the other team of runners; this could give you an advantage.

Anyway, there all kinds of strategies. I suspect the easiest one to make you competitive is get an extreme power park, load up on power/on-base guys ,(think money ball), get a number of platoons with each side having power, and get good defense up the middle. I think you'll do fine doing something like that. My lone ATG team (Until that team I exclusively played 20XX) is down below and I was decent (not great), to give you some idea of what such a team would look like.

Good luck!

Have good arms in the outfield and good defense up the middle. One thing I watch is the Pitchers hold. If you got a guy with a +5 hold and a catcher with a +2 arm my 82 year old Mother can steal on you. I like to have at least one really good arm in the outfield. If they are all + arms you will give up way too many bases. If you cant throw you will be run on all the time. When there are 2 out Strat adds two to every runner. A 1-13 runner becomes a 1-15. It can mean the game if you have a +2 arm in the outfield. That makes that 1-13 runner into a 1-17 and that is blazing speed in this game.

Good luck take your time and watch what the teams around you do. I have learned much from watching what the Vets do. When you get into a League you can click on the other Managers names and see how much they play and checkout what they do.

Ask questions here and in your League as you will get help for all you need. Most will be pleasant but some will not be. All on here will help you but some will be more direct than others will. It will all help you to win.

Freeman and Mike, thank you for the tips.

Mike, I didn’t give much consideration to arms and stealing when I drafted my team. I will take a second look before the season starts.

Freeman, I did try to match up my team power with an easy ballpark.
I do want to ask about having 9-pitchers on your team. Is that enough to make it thru a season?

Depends on what the cap is. If you get all S9s and they cost 10 million each in a 80 million league, I think relief is somewhat irrelevant. If you go away from S9s or high quality, then you'll need to spend more though I am not sure about needing more than 9 pitchers. Maybe. There are just too many contigencies to answer that question. But 4 ten million S9s in a 80 or 90 million cap league, 9 pitchers are ok. I think. My experience is limited in ATG, but it certainly did not matter in the league I was in.

The best tip I can offer you is this...

Figure out who the value players are at every position, and get as many as you can on your team.

By value I mean players that outperform their price tag. They can be any price point $0.50 - $15.0M!

Rank them highly on your draft list. in other words, don't be afraid to put a 2 or 3M player first on your list. There are always great star players left in the free agent pool. The value guys win in this game.

Good luck.

Michael.

How is this done? A few managers crunch the numbers and come up with their own ratings but how would the casual manager determine the value players? Any hints would be appreciated.

There is a forum specifically for ATG set.
This is a forum for single season sets which is easier to play since there are much less cards to choose from.
Tip 1 -Read and learn the rules especially what the Ballpark Effect symbols do.
