New league - greatest players - 6 teams $160M

PostMon Mar 30, 2020 12:26 pm

I recently participated in a live draft league with the idea of each of the six team drafting one of the best players ever at each position.

I think it's a great concept, and I'd like to try a similar approach again, with a few tweaks to hopefully make it better, more fair overall, and less cumbersome to apply. I think a 6-team league works best. $160 million salary cap. Looking for volunteers. Sign up below.

First off, we need a good, sorted list everyone can agree on of who's the best ever at each defensive position and pitcher. Here's what I found, and I think it's the best template to use as a starting point. You'll notice each list of players is unique, in other words, a player's position is the one he played the most games at (there are a few exceptions I can see however, Carew played more games at 1B, Musial in LF, and Torre at C).

2. These lists do not include Negro League players, an obvious problem. We would have to include the elite NeL players in SOM such as Josh Gibson, Oscar Charleston, Willie Wells and Satchel Paige as well. If a manager wants to draft a top NeL player at a position, it will be allowed. The RP list has glaring problems, I like the idea of ranking RP by total saves instead of WAR or JAWS.

4. We love offense, so I think having a DH which allows our stud SPs go deep into the game without danger of being pinch hit, is the way to go. The pool of best ever DH should be those players at the top of their respective positions we wouldn't want to play on defense - corner infielders and corner OF 4 or higher, middle infielders and CF 3 or higher. From highest Offensive WAR , this list would include Cap Anson, Gary Sheffield, Frank Thomas, Miguel Cabrera, Paul Molitor, Harmon Killebrew, Johnny Mize, Edgar Martinez and NeL players Jud Wilson, Mule Suttles, Tubby Scales, John Beckwith and Oscar Heavy Johnson. refer to https://www.baseball-reference.com/lead ... reer.shtml

3. What I'd like to propose is, instead of a live draft, conduct a player draft on the Individual League Chat (ILC) forum. We would randomize the draft order, and the manger with the first pick would choose a position to draft, and selects a player at that position. the remaining managers select a player from that position. Then the manager in the second draft position chooses another position and selects a player at that position, with the other managers following in order, the guy who picked first in the previous round going last.

When the first 12 rounds draft are done on the boards, each team would have 8 position players, two SP, one RP, and a wild card from either SP, RP or DH. We enter our teams and auto draft the rest of the roster including cheap backups.
