Double Franchise League - Preseason

PostSat Apr 04, 2020 11:22 am

With many of us stuck at home for a while and no real baseball to enjoy, I thought it might be time to start an ambitious keeper theme league. I did a version of this way back when there was only one mystery card game and it was fun. Here’s the concept:

1. Owners draft two franchises for the 60s season, in a snake draft.
2. After the 60s are done, each owner picks one franchise to keep.
3. For the 70s, teams draft a second franchise from those left available, in reverse order of finish. And so on, for the 80s and 90s.
4. Player availability is based on the teams identified for the 5 years for each players card for that decade. If all 5 cards are with one franchise, the owner with that franchise gets his exclusive rights. If there are 2 or more teams on the player’s card, the owners with those teams will compete for that player, through the autodraft, waiver draft and free agency.

Examples:
1. Team BC drafts the Orioles and Mets for the 60s.
2. Team BC keeps the Orioles for the 70s.
3. Team BC drafts the Cubs with in the 70s draft as the owner who had the Cubs in the 60s kept their other franchise. Team BC also keeps the Orioles in the 80s and drafts the Mariners as their second franchise for this decade. For the 90s, Team BC keeps the Mariners and drafts Marlins as their second franchise.
4. Team BC has exclusive rights to Brooks Robinson for the 60s, since all his years on his 60s card are with Baltimore. For Frank Robinson, Team BC must compete with the owner who has the Reds. For Moe Drabowsky, Team BC must compete with the teams who have the A’s, Cardinals and Royals, since he has 4 teams on his 60s card.

Other rules:
Salary cap: $100 million for each season
Stadium: Each owner must use one of the two ballparks for the teams they’ve drafted. This can change from season to season.
DH: No DH for 60s. DH for the remaining seasons.
Divisions: Will be based on the draft order for the 60s, so the teams with the top franchises compete against each other. Based on order of finish for the remaining seasons.
Rosters: Due to its limited player pool, there will be some roster restrictions for the 60s – probably no more than two C-primary and 25-player roster limit.

There will be some other rules to be worked out. Trades, for example – there’s a complicated way to do trades and a simple way. I’m open to considering some rule suggestions as long as the essence of the theme is maintained.

The 60s will get a little confusing in terms of franchises, since there’s two KC’s, two Washington’s, two Milwaukee’s and so on. We will be using the 1969 expansion teams, since we need to have 24 teams drafted. There’s obviously limited players available for the Expos, Royals, Padres and Pilots but there are some. I expect the teams who drafted the best franchises will end up with the expansion teams.

This league isn’t for inexperienced or really casual SOM players. It will take some research and effort. I’d prefer to limit membership to SOMers with a track record of being in theme leagues, who we know will comply with the rules and not bail because it’s hard.

It might take a while to fill the league but I think it will be worth it. Who’s in?:

Sorry, but I have decided to pull out of the league before it starts.
