Super Relievers NERF in Help Wiki

PostMon Apr 13, 2020 8:02 am

Not a fan of Wikis in general, but in case anyone missed it as I did, the Help wiki was updated:
https://somonline.fandom.com/wiki/Bullpen_v3

Again, not advocating wither way regarding Super Relievers, but this change introduces more uncertainty to the black box controlling manager behavior, not more. Focusing on an effect/symptom, rather than a root cause. Lots of "May" "Might" etc.

I guess reading it closely, the most irritating thing is trying to corral everyone into HOW they play the game. I thought that's why we pay the money? It is much less fun if I am told how I must use everyone.

Changing the values of players with price premiums would have been much more effective, much easier than tweaking and changing the game engine, and created less unexpected results down the road. I don't use super relievers, but this isn't just about that--it is changing the way the BP algo runs in general, with check boxes not indicating exactly what they say they mean, maybe, except sometimes...

200M leagues are going to be ugly when every reliever is fatigued. 45-35 with a ten run inning to win it in the bottom of the 9th

I agree with you 100%. When they did that survey, I submitted that SALARY and nothing else should control player use.

Well... it will certainly be more realistic, as you won't know if your guy will pitch well or be a miserable fail. :?

Agree with you Frankie. You said it very well. I'll just point out two things because I can't make your points any better than you already did.

1: The wiki has a premise that managers could previously (until the new changes) "...have certain pitchers pitch 200+ innings in relief, sometimes upwards of 250."

This is partially accurate and partially way off. Yes, a good R3 reliever (like Sutter, although there are plenty of others) could get around 250 innings in a non-DH league. But in DH leagues, super-relievers can easily generate over 400 innings. Murray and/or Adams can hit 450. I don't know if their (partially) incorrect premise matters or not, so I guess I am just pointing it out.

2: The wiki indicates that the minimum number of pure relievers is going up from 4 to 5. However, in ATG the minimum number of pure relievers is currently 3. So is it going to go up from 3 to 4 in ATG, or 4 to 5 in ATG?

Hi guys--all I can say is Yup I agree with you all.

Chompsky, really good additional points. It illustrates that the ground truth they assumed to be operating from was maybe just anecdotal from the survey. How you define the problem is an important step if you want a relevant solution. And then guys like SteveF and others actually offered solutions.

Don't know on item two. I think Moose had clarified the confusion to find out it was being applied to ATG for the BS Tourney starting around April/May. But I just posted this question there:

I am not picking on the folks at SOM, but trying to understand.

It certainly looks like they are trying, and let's face it, as goes interest in baseball, so goes interest SOM. And that's a tough one in recent years.
