Moneyball Baseball Contract Thread

Now that we have nearly completed the draft, I would like us to start offering contract extensions to our players. These extensions will begin next year and continue for the number of years offered. Remember, everyone on your roster is currently signed to a one year contract for the current year. You may choose to cut any player during the contract extension period, which will make them a free agent next year. The following are the options available to you.

You may offer a contract extension to any player with 6+ years of service for as many years as you would like to sign them as long as you either match their current salary or offer the minimum salary required for the years of the contract, which ever is higher. If you do not offer an extension then they become a free agent in 2020.

For players with 5 years of service entering their ARB 3 year in 2020 you have three options: (1) announce that you are taking them to arbitration, which will extend your team control for one more year; (2) offer them a five year contract extension at the average salary of the top 25% of players at their primary position; or (3) announce that you will be releasing the player, in which case they will become a free agent in 2020.

For players with 3-4 years of service entering the ARB 1 or 2 years in 2020, you have three options: (1) announce that you are taking them to arbitration, which will extend your team control for one more year; (2) offer them a four year contract extension at the average salary of the top 50% of players at their primary position; or (3) announce that you will be releasing the player, in which case they will become a free agent in 2020.

Players with 1-2 years of service are under team control and can be resigned next year at their current salary or the league average salary for their year of service, whichever is higher; OR you can announce that you are releasing them. If you release the player, they become a free agent for 2020.

I will be posting the first wave of contract signings for my team in the next day or two as an example of how they should be posted.

Phil, for the arb players (3-5 yrs), will you be posting the appropriate position average salaries for extension purposes, or are you trusting us to calculate these on our own?

before announcing extensions or arbitration, I'd like to know what the top 25% or top 50% for each position is. Can you list that ASAP as that seriously effects the decision to extend, cut, or arbitrate.

Just to clarify, with the players with 5 years of service it should be 2) offer them a minimum 5 year contract...
With 3 and 4 yr guys the extension has to be 4 years no more no less. With 5 yr guys it has to be a minimum of 5 years but it can be for as long as you want. Also for players at 5 years that are being extended it should read ... at their primary position, or their 2019 SOMO price, whichever is higher. Players priced higher than the league average prices you have posted don't get to be extended at a discount. Hopefully everyone's aware already but just in case.

Are you asking why are we doing this now because of baseball not being played right now? Or are you asking in general why we don't wait till later as our regular way of doing contracts?

I am asking the 2nd question....as our regular way?? I think I interpret the rules that these decisions need to be made by Nov 30 in a normal year. What is there to be gained by doing it now?

By top 10% do you mean top 25% for the 5th year player extension calculation? Do you need to recalculate?
