Tinkering with the lineups

PostSat Apr 18, 2020 12:10 pm

I wonder how many of us adjust our lineups during the season. I am not referring to deliberate changes that are focused on match ups, but moving guys around based on their 'performance'.

Logically, past dice rolls do not have any effect on future rolls, but now and again you see a player so severely under performing that you are tempted to move him down in the lineup to see if he can break loose.

Anyone else do it, or am I missing real baseball so much that I am fantasizing about being Earl Weaver again......

I do it only if I notice some data-driven reason to do so. In the pre-season I do a lot of scenario testing to decide on the most likely outcomes.

For instance, maybe I have a decent hitter with a -1 clutch batting 5th behind a much better hitter. If I see the #4 hitter getting many IBBs in critical situations, I may push a hitter with better clutch into the 5 slot, or move the 4 hitter up in the order.

Then again some studies have shown lineup order has limited effect on production, except that the most important part is usually shown to be that the best hitter should get most plate appearances (bat highest), in descending order.

It's the first thing I do when a team is going badly. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than paying the drop fee to swap out players :D

With smallball/speed teams, I do it every series starting after game 30. I base the lineup that night by Highest to lowest OBP. Most of the time it seems to work out.

What he said ^^^^^^

If guys aren't hitting like they should be, I'll shakeup the lineup a bit in hopes it brings a spark.

I put a lot of time in setting up my team to try to create the most optimal lineups/pitching prefs/etc. Once I do that and the season starts I just let it ride. Never trust your eyes in day-to-day fluctuations!

When setting my initial lineup for the season, I dope everything and make 100% certain everyone is where they belong. But if (and only if) a team is underperforming then I shuffle the lineup in hopes it'll change the mojo.

I just wanted to be clear in case someone else was looking for advice or that type of thing. Unless I make changes to the roster I won't change it more than a couple times a season if they're struggling. Sometimes it seems to help, other times not so much. But it feel better to do something than nothing ...
