The game engine supports 2b and SS & OF positions being 'transferable' when unrated as per those SOM CD-ROM rules. For example, CF-1 can go to RF-1 or LF-1. But, the Manager GUI does NOT support being able to select a player for a position they are not rated at.
This can be overcome with some difficulty based on how the game engine will interpret and substitute a player at a position in your lineup when there is NO eligible player on your roster at that position. The game engine will also maintain the open place in your lineup for the substitute it selects. This will only work as I describe if there is no one rated at that position on your roster. I have leveraged this effectively on two teams. I had no one rated in LF on my roster and left the position batting fifth open in my lineup. I had two starting quality RFs on my team with one of them left out of my lineup who was rated as a RF-2 (with no rating in LF). HAL correctly put him in LF batting 5th for every single game. His fielding stats were consistent with a 2 rating (and his e rating). It worked the entire season without a hiccup. I haven't done't it with two shortstops and no second basemen (which would be harder to orchestrate). But, I am sure it would work the same way.
